HP L7780 all-in-one fails alignment test; will not print in black

I have done all the resets and spent about 5 hours in the phone with HP. Nothing works. The printer prints its self test just fine...but in Magenta...no black, evenn though it is set to print all text in black.

Clean the encoder strip, that is the plastic strip that runs near to the traction belt.

    First ensure you are performing the alignment procedure correctly.

    Clean the encoder strip, that is the plastic strip that runs near to the traction belt.
    The encoder strip tells the printer the position of the carriage and print head, when there is an alignment problem this part is usually the responsible.
    Use cotton and isopropyl alcohol to clean the strip.

    Fails the alignment is a different thing, if the printer prints all in magenta, then it has a clogged or faulty print head, try using a cleaning cartridge, see HP CLEANING CARTRIDGES,
    if that does not work have the print head replaced.

this is a simple problem, the technology that printer aligns its print head automatically by the reading the align page, if your printer head are not in good health/clogged align print wont come properly result align pending..When printer gets power on its prints align page till align completes. Go to tool box in system all programme, perform clean print head, check the quality of printer outs then ask to printer to align.. if its not completing replace print heads..

First, try power cycling the printer (Turn it off, wait 5 sec, turn it on). If this does not resolve the issue, try removing the cartridges and reinserting them carefully.

hello, you will need to run a cleaning cycle, you are looking for black printing, if not printing well, it might fail, if it does you will need #88 printhead. the black/yellow one. most times you will not need calibration to print, unless machine is stuck in that mode and won't pass. and won;t allow for print.

You need to remove the black/yellow printhead and dab it on a damp paper towel until you see a solid line of black ink on the towel when you press it. It won't pass the alignment until all colors work properly.

My printer has the message " alignment failed refer to device documantation". How do I fix this.


Use the setup button and scroll down to print reports, print the self test report and it should show all colors. If any color is not printing you probably need a new printhead for that color. Otherwise do a printhead cleaning until all colors print, and then alignment won't fail.

if the paper is coming out out-of-align, that suggest the one of the roller need to be replaced.
either call HP to ge a maint. ket or replace rollers. Cost is high compare to the price of the machine.

HP L7780 will not align and will not print in black. When I print out the self-testpage, it prints only in magenta. I have gone through 5 hours of BS with HP and nothing seems to work.


I just went through this problem. I called HP and they said to do a Semi-Reset, which is where you first make sure the plug is directly plugged into the wall outlet, not a power strip or battery backup, unplug the printer while it is powered on, wait 20-30 seconds,and while holding # and 6 plug the cord back into the printer, wait for a message or blank screen and then push the "On/Off" button. This has worked for me a few times now, although you have to go through some setup to get it back to where you like it.

HP 3310 ink cartridge not recognised


My HP 3310 wil not print black. The color prints fine. Spent 2 hours on the phone with HP support only to be told to buy a new printer. The machine is less than 2 years old. There must be a way to repair this. Any ideas? Barbara
