Question about IBM ThinkPad R31 2656 Notebook

1 Answer

Ibm thinkpad r31 no mains power or battery power.

Laptop started to switch off dead if moved. If you remove ac adaptor supply and battery, then reconnect it would recover. Tapping laptop base causes charge light to show. Fault is now so bad the laptop is now dead. Removed cover from motherboard and supply is ok from addaptor and battery is charging, but no switch-on or boot from cold. Keyboard led light is pemanantly lit after switch-on or connection of dc input mains adaptor. Help please ......... Regards Gary

When I turn on my latop shows two error messages 0250; System battery is dead, 0270, real time error. and does not raise the operating system.

Hello and welcome to FixYa.Com
The 0250 error indicates your CMOS battery is dead and needs to be replaced. This is a common issue on machines once they get a few years old.
The 0270 error indicates your main board is not getting the date and time from your BIOS. This is more than likely directly related to the 0250 error.
You have 2 choices: 1. Replace the battery yourself. - Not so easy but not very expensive. 2. Take it to a professional repair location and have them do it. - Easy but expensive.
If you go option 1 then he following website contains very detailed instructions on replacing the CMOS battery in a R31. http://www.edmartechguide.com/2010/03/ibm-thinkpad-r31-laptop-disassembly.html
If you go option 2 then the cost should run you anywhere from $25 - $100 depending on their labor rate. Always get an estimate first and make sure they understand exactly what you want done.
I hope this helps, and dont forget to vote!

My ibm laptop contionusly beeps and says power scource is battery, when i press esc, it boots normally and shuts down in about 15 mins to half an hour

Either:
A. Bad battery
Or
B Bad power supply.

Sounds like the battery isnt charging correctly , the beeping is warning you it is running out of power.

Take the battery out , and boot normally with the ac adapter.

Does it work?

If yes, Get new battery. about 70-90 dollars.

If no. Get new ac adapter. 20-40 dollars.

Defintely getting power, but not switching on.

There are several possibilities. Let's start with the easiest two. First the battery, take it out and try starting up only with the power supply. Then the memory chips. If a memory chip fails it can cause a no start in IBM's. Take the memory out and try it. Then try it, putting them in one at a time. If these don't work, then I'm afraid your problem lies within. Namingly the power management chip on the motherboard. The pm chip controls the power input, and allows such functions as switching between battery and AC, and battery charging. The pm chip can go without warning, and just because it lights and shows charging doesn't mean this chip hasn't malfunctioned. I've had several IBM's come through my shop that have experienced the same problem you're describing. I've also had them with problems like; it will only power with the battery, won't charge the battery, will charge battery and only run with battery shuts down while charging, only power under AC, etc... all pm chip related issues. Unfortunately, the only solution is motherboard replacement.

T30 2366 8GA After removing AC Adaptor battery icon shows Charging and working on AC

there is a switch in the plug end to the back of your comp its like a little swinging door that when you unplug out of back of comp this switch engages battery now if you unplug just from wall its going to see these 2 things the doors not shut but i have to keep working so it sets aside the plug still recognizing it of course but running off the battery trying to still find out why the powers not there but the plug is still plugged in and it will continually search until it reaches its falt point of dead battery
its like a battery backup for your system it gets unplug but wants to know where the power is

now in reference to the little swinging door i call it its a power over relay in your comp for some reason its not closing properly to allow battery to run by self
this is usually just a switch that needs adjusted in the motherboard configuration

Is the battery OK and holding a charge? If not then the AC adaptor or it's connector may be faulty and disconnecting power when the laptop is moved.

IBM T21

i have the same problem. actually its a common problem for many T21 and other old IBM laptops.
i searched that you have to take all power (batery, adaptor)
press the power 10 times and press it for 30 secs then reinsert the battery or adaptor and try to power it on.
they say its done to discharge a certain capacitor that got overcharged after overcharging the battery.
that worked for me before but now my T21 wont start any more with this process.
