You can also try booting off cdrom (or a live linux cdrom) then edit the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, or /etc/shadow/passwd (exactly which depends on your installation options and linux distribution) to delete the encrypted password string.
That will mean root has no password; naturally, you'll want to rectify that as soon as you boot up from the hard drive.
