I don't know = I assume it is internal because it is just a computer - not other boxes, etc. ..

Are you trying to share the printer out when it is attached to a computer or do you have it connected to a router with a network cable?

Are you using an external print server or is it internal?

I am going to assume that the printer is plugged directly into the desktop and if so then you need to go to printer and setting and setup you color laserjet as a shared printer. Now see if you can see the printer on your network, thru the wireless connection on the laptop.
once done that will probbably work, but you are probbably going to need your desktop on to print

Caution lite flashing over cartridge of hp deskjet 940c. error message says that there is not color ink cartridge in printer. There is and the interface says the tank is full. It won't print...

Even though the interface says the cartridge is full, if the printer detects it being empty, odds are you will have to replace the color cartridge, even though you are only printing black.
You can try taking the cartridge out and cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser and reseat the color cartridge. If no change, replace the cartridge.

I can't create custom document sizes anymore since upgrading to Dell Optiplex 760. My printer is hp laserjet 4250n. Both pc and printer are networked.

from what i know you need to have the postscript driver to create custom size docs. When you printing open your printer driver and choose custom paper size:) try the hp website and download the latest driver from their website and tell those punks to give you admin rights:)

Setting up printer on home network

Because your printer is not either wireless or network capable, the only way to get the results you need is to purchase a usb print server, hook it to your router, set it up through it's management console, and if your router is wireless, you can hook up to your router and print to your printer with your desktop turned on or off.
