Question about Sony DRU-710A DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner

Sony DVD RW DRU-710A

Hi, i'm hoping you can help!
I have the above dvd drive installed in my computer its internal, earlier this week i bought the dark knight dvd and the drive started making noises like it was trying to read the dvd but couldnt manage too and so the dvd didnt work.
The extras dvd did work so i assumed it was just the movie dvd which was currupt but i got it to work on my playstation 2 dvd player....

anyway its been a few days and i finally came back to using my sony dvd rom and its not reading anything now wont read cd-r's or dvd's any of them it makes the same noises like its trying to read them but cant and in the end says to insert a cd in the drive...
i uninstalled it and allowed windows to reinstall it but that still didnt help.
Has the drive itself somehow damaged itself and needs some sort of physical repair? or its completly gone and so i'll need to buy another one or is there some explaination?
it should be noted since the last time i used the drive a few days ago and today when i noticed this problem i did update my microsoft stuff the automatic update and i also tried to use system restore which didnt help.

hope that made sense

Billy

How to Install Sony DRU-710A DVD-RW

Hi there,

Cd/dvd drives don't actually require a driver to run. They use "class filter drivers" which are supplied by a burning program like Nero or NTI. These "class filter drivers" only add functionality to the drive. Windows just uses a generic driver "MSCDEX" to run them.

A couple of things to try:

Uninstall the drive. Open Device Manager, click on the + sign next to CD/DVD ROM drives, right click on the drive and select uninstall. Exit and restart your system. When windows loads, it will recognise a hardware change, and will ask if you want to install. Before you click anything, insert the disc that came with the drive (if you have one). This should then install, if not, let windows search. If windows can't find anything, select "I will choose the driver manually" and look for your drive in the list.

Another thing to do, is download the most current Chipset drivers for your motherboard (which I would recommend anyway, even if the above worked).

Update the Firmware version and the internal drivers for your drive. These can be found here: http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/112#drivers

Also, update windows to the latest Service Pack (SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista) if you haven't got them already.

If you have Vista, did you recently update to SP1 via Windows Update? If the answer is yes, please let me know.

Hope these solve your problem

Tim

I have window xp my dvd burner worked fine before now it doesnt

What do you mean "it just stays there"? Can you be a bit more specific? The writing speed doesn't really mean anything apart from being able to burn quicker.

The "drivers" for the sony dru 710a can be downloaded from here:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/112#drivers

I would also update the Firmware version too.

Hope that works

Instalaion

Hi there,

You don't actually need a driver. All cd/dvd drives are plug and play. All you need to do is plug it all in to your system, turn it on, and Windows will do the rest. Once Windows has installed it. You can update everything from here:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/112#drivers

Hope this solves your problem

Sony DRU 710 not writing DVDs or CDs

as with all writers eventually they fault at the lens and it gets out of line and cannot read discs, you can try the usual thing of checking Sony for any firmware updates, but first:- Go to my computer>right click>hardware tab>device manager, then down list to cd/dvd drives and click '+' sign and highlight your writer, right click on it and select uninstall. Restart PC and it will be automatically re installed, try again and if no change you will need to replace the drive as they are cheaper nowadays
