Hi there,

I notice an odd thing about the detail of the vote totals for both of our fixya raitngs, namely that the totals of the various catagories of rating don't sum to the same total as the number of votes. In my case I'm missing some votes, in yours you seem to have an extra vote somewhere in there :-)

Should I be able to add up all of the totals of "FixYa", "Helpfull". etc. votes and get the total listed as "xx votes" up at the top? If I then add the "Unrated" total shouldn't I get the total number of solutions I posted?

Not a big deal, but I wanna understand.

Thanks,

Carl

Carl,

Your question has been echoed by nearly every expert that has been rated more than three times. Split those numbers into two categories:

- Rating Percentages
- Rating Totals

- A problem is posted
- You post a solution
- Someone else posts a solution
- When the problem is redisplayed both solutions show. The Asker has not yet rated either.
- The other solution has the four rating choices (FY, H, TFT, IA). If you felt like it, you have the ability to rate that solution, as does anyone else who happens to 'drive-by'.
- Yours does not. Self rating is frowned upon. However, everyone else can rate it.
- Say someone does just that and rates a FixYa. The FixYa shows on top of the solution. Everyone but the person that rated you can still rate you.
- The Asker then Rates your solution a Fixya.
- The solution will still show a FixYa up top.
- At the bottom, Rating Locked! Asker has rated this solution as FixYa. No more ratings can be made.
- There are still two votes there for one solution. There can be more.

- A solution is unlocked as long as the Asker has not rated it.
- An unlocked solution is ratable by anyone but the providing expert.
- Once an Asker rates a solution, it is locked. Only the Asker can change the rating at that point. All others are locked out
- A solution can be rated many times while unlocked.
- You can only rate a solution once.
- There is no easy, after the fact way to tell how many times a particular solution has been rated. You can't just eyeball it and be able to tell.

The percentages are a whole different story. There has been speculation by the truckload on the math that makes up the rating percentages. The proofs don't proof.

I was a math major, consistently scoring in the 99th percentile in everything from Algebra to Advanced Trigonometry. I've got 25 years of data processing experience, I program in 13 languages, I'm a system developer, programming engineer and dozens of other titles. In short, I've got applicable skills in the area.

That said, I still haven't reverse engineered the algorithyms that come up with those percentages. So don't beat yourself up. If you want the algorythm that it is supposed to be based on, let me know. It is close, but there is still some unknown variable being factored into the mix.

Hopefully this clarified a portion of your curiousity

Two sidebars:

One involves a Generac 6.6kv generator that I'll put into an AskMe

The other is only a suggestion is from one Expert to another. There is goodwill to be garnered by exercising a measure of professional courtesy when rating fellow experts.

We each know the difficulty in maintaining percentages. The fact that many Askers do not understand the ratings system (how could they?) when they cast their votes.

Knowing this, I would rather not rate someone, than rate them down. This is only an opinion and is meant to be a constructive positive critique. I hope you interpret it that way.

With your background, I anticipate asking you many questions in the near future. I look forward to starting these interactions in the same way this one ends, on a positive note.

Once again, I hope this at least explains the total side of the ratings.

Hi Carl. The problem is that the interface is very misleading. The total number of votes is the absolute total number of votes that have been cast on your solutions. Your numeric percentage is the average of those votes. But each solution may receive several votes. Those votes are averaged for that solution, and the resulting rating is what appears on the site and in the FY, H, TFT, IA break down. That is why the numbers do not add up. I hope this clears things up. Sorry for the delayed response, but I was on Christmas holiday. Please feel free to contact FixYa Support Team directly at: http://www.fixya.com/contact

FixYa is not a polling site. Please contact your local voter regstration agency to find the site for your precinct. Sorry, I can't give any further details without knowing what part of the world you're in.

Hi fixyamaster,The solutions that receive the most Thumbs Up are usually at the top. However, since the asker's vote is weighted proportionally higher in the displayed rating, a question that has actually received many Thumbs Ups from other users will have a lower displayed rating if the asker gave it a low vote. See this Tip of mine for more details on our rating system: How FixYa's Ratings Work

Hi carloadrian,
I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to apply as a Premium Expert. I will refer this issue to our QA Team, and they will look into why you cannot apply.

She just got back from vacation so there is probably a healthy backlog. Be patient. She always gets to it.

When people dont rate your listing, it wont show up. I have answered a TON of questions, but they dont all have ratings yet.

on that note, dont forget to rate my solution :)

I carefully checked each of the solutions I was rated on, none seem to have more than 1 vote listed. That part makes me a little suspicious of your answer. For now I'll just ignore the mystery votes (those that are listed in the total but show up no where else), and take it as given that you are unable to "see" the algorithm that does this averaging in code. For what it's worth, my several years in the software QA field says that if I can't do the math by hand and get the same answer as the code does, then there is something wrong/different about the code. Each solution page ought to either list all the votes recorded or not attribute multiple votes to a single voter.

I'll keep contributing as I can. Add my voice to whatever list there may be calling for a more obvious and transparent scoring system.

Carl

Thanks, that answered my questions satisfactorily.

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments and look forward to having great times with FixYa.
