Panasonic DMR-ES 15 'no read' problem

Similar problem to many others with this unit I think. No matter what type of DVD I insert I get the three bangs of the lens driver against the shaft, a small spin of the disc and the 'no read' error. I have opened up the drive unit and as per some suggestions on the forum tried the following
1. Sliding the lens unit to the end of its track towards the back of the unit 2. Cleaning the rubber grip on the spinning mechanism.
Neither of the above appears to work. The unit of out of warrenty by 6 months. Looks like it may be a more serious fault requiring a new part but if anyone has any further suggestions please let me know

Also cleaned the lens but to no avail..

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think it will be worth getting a new unit. Any other suggestions?

Thanks to all for help so far. The consensus seems to be that if lens cleaning doesn't work, and it doesn't, the only other option is back to a repair center?

  • gejkelly Dec 21, 2008

Such a pity that panasonic is now making equipment that simply will not last more than 2-3 years. I've been buying panasonic for 20 years and most of the equipment I have is still running. Looks like this piece of **** will be my last purchase with them.

Solution here is a repair involving time and a replacement part and while it will probably work I will just buy a new unit. Thanks for the help.

This is really a problem with the lens of the unit and it should be replace and the only way you can have the lens replace is to take it to a service center and let them replace it , that will be cheaper than getting a a new unit...

Yeah!!! contact panasonic for a replacement lens.. You need to change the lens. Only a few screws holds it in place so you can do it your self. The replacement comes with instructions (well i got mine with them) after you change it you will need to align it by adjusting the alignment screws.

More than leaning the rubber grip, you need to clean the lens itself, inside the lens pickup, using isopropyl alcohol and a q tip cotton tip. did you clean the lens in this way?

If it does not work, replace3 the lens pickup.

Nop read means Lens problem, and this fault is serious enough.

If it was a problem obn the board, you get protection mode, when you get no disk on allo media, it is dirty lens, or faulty lens pickup, or no contact to lens pickup.

Try cleaning the lens with alcohol , if this does not work, replace the lens pickup.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. When a Panasonic is giving "no read" and there are loud "clunking" or "chugging" noises this usually indicates that the lens is dirty or has failed. Other problems may include a failing or failed Digital PCB or some problem with the ribbon cables from the DVD Drive to the Digital PCB (on 2006 models such as the DMR-EZ models there is some problem with the ribbon cables to the DVD Drive on-board controller board.
Please check this picture for ribbon cable connections--

There maybe a problem with the optic lens (dirt) try to clean it very gently with cotton, also the motor plate that holds the cd/dvd is not holding it very well so it not rotates at proper speed try to clean the both sides where the hole of the cd/dvd is when it´s inserted, if you think that you migth not have skills for that don´t do it.

Hope it help

Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder won't read most dvd-r brands

Hello jancinn,

This might be due to a dirty pickup or scan laser head, or the optics as a whole might be going bad (both are common problems). A qualified TV repair person should be able to determine if the scan laser or pickup head are bad by doing a laser power test. If the optical devices are dirty it is just a simple matter of cleaning them with a DVD cleaning disk, however if the optics are bad, then replacing them is actually cost inefficient, and you may want to think about getting a new DVD player/recorder.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Panasonic DVD Recorder Model DMR-ES15

For the unit to be confirmed if its o.k or not You have to take disc which is not very knew and slight scratches ,offcourse which is playing in your other dvd player.Play it on dmr-es 10 see if it plays normally,if it does than its lens is o.k.Other thing you can try is insert blanck disc and try formatting it,if it does than it s o.k.Try R+,R- AND RW+,RW-.iF This disc can be formatted on dmr es10 than the unit you can decide to purchase
