Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

Drive wont power up or down

I have this device for more than a year now and it was working perfectly. Suddently 3 days ago i see the drive on my computer but i cannot access it. When i highlight the drive it doesnt show the size as usual. I cannot access my files. Itried to power down the device by pressing the button but it doesnt have any effects. I had to unplug the cord and plug it back in. Sometimes the blue light comes up and sometimes it doesnt. The result is the same though, the drive is offline and i dont see it anymore on my computer. yesterday it worked when i unplug it and plug it back in, but now nothing seems to work. I tried to plug it straight on the power outlet then the device spins but not lights and no change. NOw the power button doesnt work at all. Dont know whats going on. It was working perfectly before. Sometimes i get the message "failed to mount".

It sounds like the hardware failed. If it no longer mounts or powers up then I would say the hdd crashed and died. Sorry.

I know there is data on my phr-250a mcally external hard drive but it's showing empty folder

Leave it connected to your computer and try a restart.
If the folder is still showing as empty, power down the computer then disconnect the external drive.
Power on the computer and connect the external hard drive to a different usb port.
I had this exact problem with a 1000 Gb external drive that was full of movies and music. I thought it had all been lost .. After 2-3 days and repeated attempts of restarts and power-downs/different usb ports it suddenly was recognised again and has worked perfectly since

Wd external hard drive

Hi Regin, I used to have a WD drive and one day I started having all sorts of formatting issues. The WD was very sensitive and then a week or so later, it started making clicking noises, and then a day later it died.
I returned it and got a new WD but in less than 8 months, I lost all my data again! I never bothered asking WD for a new one, and used it as a door stopper for a year or more! Eventually, I threw it away about a year ago.
I recently read that someone whose WD drive crashed threw it in the freezer and left it there for a couple days and then it was fine!!! I am telling you the truth, i read that here on FixYa!
In any case, be care, be tender. Dont think that just because you have a back up drive that you are protected! My experience suggests that there is something wrong with a number of WD drives! We should all get our money bacK!
I would use another kind of back up system, personally.

My Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB suddently won't start,even though i'v plugged in the power cable, theres no lights nor sound coming out from it it just suddently happen out of nowhere

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

Iomega 320 external hard drive computer wont recognise

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

well when it comes to hard drives it is bit difficult to figure out what exactly went wrong because the whole casing of the drive is solid intact and the operations are controlled by the intelligent drive electronics and these can only be analyzed using special tools so try to manage with your self skills and if it wont listen then try the service center.

Good Luck.

Very good in checking if your computers' USB ports are working. Now that you know that your computer's USB ports are working, try your USB device on his computer and check if it'll work there. If it also doesn't work there, then it'll be your USB device that's not being read.
