Question about Western Digital My Book Premium ES Edition WDG1SU5000 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Dead WD Mybook Premium Edition

In February 2007, I bought a Western Digital MyBook Premium Edition 500 GB external drive, which I used about an hour each month doing backups. In August 2008 it failed: Repeatedly goes "click-clunk" and won't go on-line. WD's position is, "Sorry, it had only a one-year warranty."

My problem is, what to do with it? Toss it in the garbage? Is there any value left in keeping it?

I don't need to recover the data (since it was a backup drive in the first place) but it would sure be nice to get some return out of my investment. I am not a happy customer.

Change the drive inside. The enclosure is still worth something if sold, but there are numerous articles online explaining how one can open the enclosure and replace the hard disk, as it is nothing but an internal desktop hard disk. Best of luck.

You could try recycling to see if they give you anything for scrap. I'm sorry to say that it would be worth nothing any other way.

Notebook does not recognize My Book / Western Digital hard drive

Did it ever work?

Connect the MyBook to a different desktop computer.
If it is not recognized, then the MyBook definitely has a problem.
Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced,
or check W.D.'s "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new W.D. drive through W.D.'s web-site, and get a discount.

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check '' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.
