Ensure the key lock is not activated by sliding
"Power on/off ( )/Hold" towards the center
position. If your player isn’t already on, turn it on by
sliding "Power on/off ( )/Hold" to the left
and holding until the player turns on.

My RCA Pearl TH1702-A MP3 Player freezes at ''PEARL''. I can not seem to do anything to fix this.

Hi Tim,
I am no expert by any means so I had my husband help me out with the exact same problem with my player which is identical to your's in style, featues and Model Number. He is no expert either but he has a knack for fixing quirky problems with electronics so after trying to reach the "real experts" online with no response for days and days, I enlisted his help. We decided to insert the player into the USB port on our computer. Before doing so we powered it on and of course all we got was the same old "PEARL" screen that it's been stuck on for days. We waited for a moment after plugging in to the USB port and then while still hooked up to the computer, we held down the round power/menu button on the top of the player for a few seconds. We then held down the other silver button on the top of the player (silver button with the arrow pointing right) for a few seconds as well. Afterwards the screen on the player began to display the "please wait" message and was no longer frozen on the "PEARL" screen that it's been stuck on for days. We then removed the player from the USB port. We shut down power on the player and immmediately powered it up again. Now it is working as normal. I'm listening to my music on it right now. We do not know why this worked. We just tried it because we had tried everything else to no avail. So, thought I'd share this with you. Maybe it's just a fluke but it worked for us. It's worth a shot ! You have nothing to lose so I'd urge you to give it a try. Best of Luck to You ! I totally understand your frustration. Hope your's works again too ! Have a great weekend !

RCA pearl 1602-A won't register when plugged into USB port.

When my computer wouldn't recognize my Pearl, these are the steps I followed after downloading the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1

remove the battery,
start the program,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button when the term "initializing" replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.

You might want to try leaving the "format data" box unchecked the first time. If that doesn't work and allow you to backup your music, bite the bullet and format the data area.

After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again. It also fixed my aac-error problem.

My pearl th1602 is froze

Remove battery, press and hold "Play" button when inserting into USB port. Run the firmware update and should be able to re-initialize the device, start the update with the "Format" option checked. Worked for me.

PC won't recognize

Either 1) the USB port on the laptop is not a USB 2.0 port, and therefore is too weak to power the mp3 player

or

2) The hold/lock switch is engaged

or

3) you plugged it in without installing the installation software

RCA TH1602 MP3 Player in locked

You should be able to force the Pearl into recovery mode by removing the battery, then hold down the "Play" button while inserting into USB port, after a few seconds, Windows should detect "USB Human Interface Device" (see Device Manager). Now you should be able run the firmware update. Worked for mine after it froze up one day and would not be detected as a USB device by Windows.

RCA Pearl TH1602 Frozen?

I had the same problem, usually plugging it into the usb port on the pc and verifying the files on the player, then disconnecting the player will solve the problem. Other times i have to reformat the player, if you do that, you will have to put all your music back on. It's a pain, this has happened to me 4 times, I've only had this thing less than 6 months! It was inexpensive, I guess you get what you pay for, but I like having a AAA battery instead of having to remember to plug it in to the pc to recharge every 15 hrs.

Rio pearl directory corrupted

first, and this is always good: If available, firmware for the Rio Carbon can be downloaded online. Second, this might be the problem: The Rio Carbon communicates with your computer differently in MTP mode than it does in MSC mode. When in MTP mode, the Rio Carbon cannot display hidden files in folders, cannot allow transfers to the root Rio Carbon directory, and cannot allow the creation of new folders. (Folders can be transferred to the Rio Carbon using drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste methods.) To use traditional folder options, change the Transfer Mode settings to put the Rio Carbon in MSC mode. Last, "..Removing the Rio Carbon from a USB connection before Idle is displayed on the screen may result in a corrupting the player's file system. If for any reason you suspect that your Rio player's file system has been corrupted, reformatting the player will restore the file system to its original state..."
