My Gateway is an MX series with XP. I try to boot up my laptop, I get to the "Log on to Windows" screen, enter my password and click "ok". My background comes up, but then nothing else. Windows XP will not load. Any suggestions?
It sounds like your Explorer.exe is corrupted or missing. when you see your desktop wallpaper then you can try to open task manager my pressing Ctrl+Altr+Delete keys all at a time and now click "new task" and type Explorer.exe and press enter. if your Explorer is OK then your icon and other thing should land up if not then restart computer and try to open computer in safe mood by pressing F8, if you can open then try restoring your computer to earlier date by going to start----program---accessories----system tools -----system restore.

Try to start up with the windows XP CD in the drive, it will give you some options to reinstall or repair XP. If this doesnot work, ensure that your BIOS will startup from CD.
