SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton engine on Murray lawn mower

I always replace the air filter if its a paper element, and even if its a foam element I replace it rather than clean it. That said, engine stumbling is rarely and air flow problem - but it could be, so having a new filter assures no air restrictions.

I would drop the carbuerator bowl. On the bottom of the carb, near where the fuel line comes into the engine, should be a nut. Removing this nut allows the bowl to drop off the carb. Some engines the bowl screws off, you will have to look at the bowl. Often the bowl has sediment or sludge buildup inside. Cleaning the bottom of the bowl can prevent that sludge/sediment from plugging the intake tube. Even on newer mower models this is a common problem, the gas line tubing interior breaks down and the inside of the tubing can start degrading - ending up in the bowl as sludge.

After cleaning the bowl, I would add one ounce of fuel line cleaner to a full tank of fuel and run the entire tank of fuel. This will clean any deposits or "varnish" from the interior carb parts. Doing this and the first step will assure your carb is clean and functioning.

If that doesn't help, then I would look at the spacing between the magneto and coil assembly. If you want to do that I'd like you to write down all the model numbers and serial numbers on the engine nameplate, that way I can give you specific directions.

Hope this helps,
Gregg

Cub cadet ltx1042kw the blades will not engage

Either the pto is not engaging or you missed routed the deck belt. Google your model number and you should get a link where you can see the correct belt routing.

Self propelled cadet mower locked up how to unlock

Check engine oil level first for proper level. If it has oil in it PULL SPARK PLUG WIRE OFF SPARK PLUG IF MORE THAN A SINGLE CYLINDER PULL ALL PLUG WIRES OFF. Put unit on its side and grab the blade and see if you can move it in either direction or if the engine is locked up.

I hit a metal pipe with my cub cadet zero turn lawn mower today. Now it smokes under the deck when I engage the blades and it is not cutting the grass. Have I ruined my mower?

You'll need to look under the deck w/ the mower not running and see why the blades aren't turning. Most likely something is bent (maybe blade) and hitting something. The smoke is probably from the belt slipping and getting hot.

Was mowing-blades just quit turning-pto will not engage

Belt has broken, or jumped off the pulley, or jumped off the belt tensioner. Look at your deck and go from there. You may have to remove your deck to get to the belts under there cvers but you will see your problem.

Replaced blades on LT 1018 series and the blades are making a grinding noise. Followed operators manual instructions, purchased proper replacement parts. can you help?

You did what you were supposed to do, new blades, proper installation, and you were happy with what you thought was going to be a good outcome. The problem is that the new blades are hitting the deck area. Old blades ware down , your mower deck was bumping into stuff . Now you have to go under with a hammer and hammer back the dents where the blades are hitting. You did very well to start, but now to finish you have to do a little bit more. You will be mowing again in no time. Good luck.

The pto on my cub cadet 1515 cuts off. It will

Mine does the same thing. I've found that normally this is a heat-related problem and by removing all the clippings from the deck the blades will re-engage just fine until (unless) the clippings mount up again. Hope this helps; I make sure the deck is clean top and bottom before I mow.

Noisey Cub Cadet mower

If the noise is coming from the deck, locate the idle pulley on the deck. there should be 1 or 2 rubber "bumpers" at the opposite end of the pulley arm where it meets the "j" pin. If they are missing, it will make a loud metal to metal sound.
