Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Door won't go down using control

Craftsman chain drive is 1994 and has worked fine. Recently door would not close. Manual indicates sensor mis alignment. I have re-aligned and door will work a couple of times or not at all. Receiver green LED is very dim or not lit. I checked voltage at each sensor 6 volts. I also switched sides with sensors same issue only with receiving sensor. Sending eye lights receiver eye doesn't . I don't think it alingment as I have moved receiving sensor around a lot with no long lasting effect. Seems like reciever on some occassions will work for 1 or two cycles of door then green LED will not stay lit.
I have read that I may need to sequence the sending sensor to the recieving sensor.

Is there a way to islote if the receining sensor is bad or if the unit has a bad controling board at the unit.

Make sure to clean off the lens so there's nothing blocking signal and make sure that theres no obstructions in the way of the photo cells before and during cycle. make sure that you have power going to them by having the Amber or red light displayed at all times and make sure that the green light is present for alignment. If it works for a couple of cycles and then goes back to being non active, make sure that the tracks or the surface that sensors are mounted to are not moving as door is in operation therefore they will move out of alignment during or after a cycle and will not allowed to operate! Make sure that none of the wires going to the cells are punctured through by any Staples! sometimes it could happen and when you move the cell around it could relocate from the staple and go back to norm, then after cycle it could short out from vibration which will send wire back to hitting stable! If none of these are helpful and you want a quick fix go down to your local home improvement store and buy a set of photo cell/safety cells and wire them up as diagram displays which is very simple and easy.

SOURCE: Craftsman chain drive is 1994

problem is probably alignment of sensors. clean off lenses too. you replace them in pairs, but i doubt you need to.

Why will the doors go up on my garage door opener but not down using the remotes. It works fine using the keyboard.

It is your remote control that is not functioning when the down button is pressed. There is no easy way to test the remote but the small light on the remote should flicker we the button is pressed. If it does not flicker press down hard on the button a few times in effort to get the light to flicker as that will be indicating that transmission is taking place. Dust can prevent good contact with the switch inside the remote and by pressing hard on the button may re-establish contact again. It is however not fail prove as the light can flicker but is still not transmitting to the motor control box. The fact that the keyboard and up function is working indicates that the remote is malfunctioning and need to be replaced.

Craftsman 1/2hp garage door opener works fine to open door but to close I have to hold button down. If not, door won't move and lights flash 10 times.

10 flashes mean sensors are obstructed... something is in the way of the door or they are not facing each other. Clear the obstruction or realign the door and it will work.

Garage door opened fine but now when I try to close it, all I hear is a buzzing sound for 3 sec., light comes on but door won't go down.

Your trolley may be jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so, loosen the chain enough to relieve the strain on the chain and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

If the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Make sure the lights on the sensors are both on and not flickering. Tweak them if necessary. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors or the wiring to them.
