This can only happend because of two factors:-

either the printer drivers not installed properly or

the paper does not match with the printers properties paper.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your comment "MARGIN ADJUSTMENTS ARE OK" would be referring to the Page Setup inside the application itself. Please verify the Paper Size inside the Printing Preferences of the Dell 1700N Properties. Open your Printer, right click on the icon of Dell 1700N, click on Properties.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Sir from the little research I've done the only thing that seems to work is to replace the drum. I have read at other sites that is is a tipical problem with this printer. But please let me know what software your using so I can delve further. This is a place that sells them online! http://www.officesupplyoutfitters.com/17...

  • David Johnson

Do you have a spare toner cartridge you could try, and have you tried un installing and reinstalling the one you have? The only reason I ask is I read somewhere that these particular printers are prone to doing this, and have also read that if you replace the toner and drum it will fix it. I am thinking that maybe this may be your particular problem. You will need a new one at some point any way so I think it would be worth a shot before you blame the program, I will do some more research and get back to you, but if in the mean time you would try that I think it might actually fix the problem.

I found this another website :

I had a paper jam this afternoon and since then when trying to print an e-mail the left margin measures the .250 it is supposed to but thefirst character in the lines is only about 1/2 there. An 8 looks like a 3 for example. Did something get knocked askew?

did the paper come out all in one piece when the jam occured, or did it come out in pieces?

one thing I would suggest is, try setting the margins over in word by 1/4 inch, see if it keep happening, and if it doesn't, try setting it back.

if it does, then probably that paper jam knocked out the alignment sensor. in which case, I would suggest calling Dell.

This guy supposed services these machines, there were other comments about paper pieces causing the problem, one person wrote in and said he found a business card stuck inside causeing his problem.

I also read in the owners manual the following, and I think may be your problem, please try this

    Dell Local Printer Settings Utility

This application is not available when the printer is connected to a network.

Use the Dell Local Printer Settings Utility to change and save printer settings not available

from the printer driver. When you change these settings, they remain in effect until you

make another selection and apply it, or until you restore the original printer settings (called

factory default settings). The settings are organized by menu, much like a printer operator

    panel.

The Dell Local Printer Settings Utility is installed automatically on your computer when

you install the Dell printer driver. Click StartPrograms or All ProgramsDell

    Printers
Dell Laser Printer 1700Dell Local Printer Settings Utility. The Dell Local Printer

Settings Utility only functions with printers connected directly to the computer.

Ok here are the possible causes

1.) the print margin on the program you are using must have been mssed up. go to the print preview on the program to verify this.. you will see where its out and you can move it back into place.

The printing preferences on the printer setup is off. slick start, printers and faxes, right click on your printer and click properties,, you can adjust it there.

I'm betting its the program your using, the ruler tab adjustment must have been accidently moved. The ruler is displayed above the work area with a notch where the current margin is. just move it back into place and your done. you can verify this using the print previes function. Its located under print in the file menu.

when you click print preview you can move it back into place by clicking and dragging.

Try resetting the printer as follows:

    1.1. Reset Dell 1700n Memory
To factory reset your Dell 1700 series printer follow these steps.

    1. Turn off your printer

    2. Open the front cover (push the button on the left side)

    3. Hold down the "Continue" and "Cancel" buttons and turn the power back on.

    4. When the "Error LED" light on the control panel is solid, close the cover and release the "Continue" and "Cancel" buttons.

Tip: To print a configuratoin sheet push the "Continue" button twice. This will give your printers IP Address.

At this point I would remove the print drivers and reinstall, it may be coming from a registry or printer setting that "you" my not be seeing. Be sure to remove all printer folders (if uninstall doesn't).

As an additional idea .. Can you test this printer with another computer? If it works using another computer then we know where the problem is coming from .. Otherwise it is the printer itself

here is a suggestion for you:

how to adjust margin on printer
In the case of some printers there is no margin requirement, however generally a margin of around 0.25 of an inch is left around the perimeter in which no images, coloring and text will be placed. This area of a print-out is called the unprintable area and some printers require that there be an unprintable area in order to function correctly. One way of checking the unprintable area on your printer is to open an application, such as WordPad for example, and from the page setup option, within file menu, you can see the size of the margin that is being selected automatically for your print-outs. When you type zero, or any lesser number, you may notice that the application automatically changes this to a higher value. If this occurs, it is because your operating system believes that the printer is not capable of printing with a margin that small. Once you are aware of the limitations of your printer you can now select the margin which you feel is most appropriate to your needs.

here is a link to a website that talks about different problems with dell printers and on page 8 it talks about how to set the margins in the printer.

this website tells you how to reset the margins for your printer.

  • Thomas Dec 20, 2008

on page 7 of the website i sent you it tells you how to reset the margins using the program that came with the printer. i think it is done through the printer properties option. and just so that i know, what is the program that your using that you can't change the margins? maybe the problem lies in that program not the printer.

i'm sorry for the confusing but i'm just trying to understanding what is happening so i can help you out.

    thanks

What causes recurrent 1LT error message?

Normally when you get an image shift it's because something went wrong in the registration section. This model has a registration roller that is driven by a clutch and solenoid. A frequent problem on this unit is that the registration solenoid will stick open and cause the print to shift on paper and it can be intermittent. You can try clean the solenoid plate, otherwise you will have to replace, the part number is 121E26000.

It isn't a fuzer problem it is most likly a image drum problem. To fix you have two choices replace the image drum with a oem part or a refurbished part or replace the printer. sometimes it is cheaper to get a replacement printer than to replace this part.

Printer skips lines

What is the make and model of your printer?

Can you give us a better description of the failure, please? For example are you getting extra vertical spaces between lines of text? Are you getting white lines in-between lines of image (photographs)?

If it is text, check the linespacing setup in the application you are using.

For example, sometimes Word will set the spacing at 1.5 LPI (lines per inch). to fix that problem you only need to change the LPI back to 1.

I can just guess it has to do with the paper being fed. either you have the paper wrong or the paper settings to a different size then the actual dimensions of your print material.
