Question about Minn Kota Maxxum 70 Freshwater Bow Mount Trolling Motor

Cannot get the throug bolts in the lower unit started.

I had to replace the pole on my Minnkota Maxxum 65lb thrust motor and when I did the wires got twisted inside the lower unit and then came unplugged inside the lower unit. I had to take it apart to get the wire plug back in and now I cannot get the lower unit bolts back in. It is like the two bolts are two short. I am very frustrated.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the reason is the 2 brushes are not resting against/on top the commutator segments of the armature. The commutator segments are the thin slivers of brass (narrow, long) cut in rectangular strips encircling the lower part of the armature. Rather, the brushes are blocking the armature from settling down towards the rear end part of the housing.

There is a technique - the carbon brushes have to be squeezed back into its recesses before sliding into the armature affording the brush holder/plate to mount. One trick is to use stiff wires to act as opposing prongs holding the brushes back while inserting the armature. In some designs, there are "peep holes" with rubber cover allowing the insertion of hooked wires to pull the brushes back.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

You must have mixed up the bolts,, or didnt mount it back up correctly,, You took it apart you can put it back together,, If you want a short cut ,, go a hardware store and but bigger bolts with the same threading,, cut them to the size you need and put them it..

    Minn Kota 65lb thrust 24v

    Hello!
Your unit was desined to run on 24 Volts.
The control unit (electronics) will not run below 19 Volts (19 or 20, I can't remember) and the armature windings and magnets are designed for 24V as well. So, an easy answer is no your unit will not operate in 12volts.
    Hope this helps out!

I suspect the the bearings and cups are damaged and binding the tubes. Have a look at key #'s95, 78, 58, 59, 78A, 79. as these are the actual brgs and cups.

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere. I would take it to a authorized dealer for repair if it's still under warranty. Can get a bit tricky to repair yourself unless you're comfortable with soldering.

I need to replace the bearings in my Maxxum 65lb Thrust trolling motor.

If you never did this before , I strongly advise take it to a local shop....if you don't seal it correctly, you will end up buying a new one for water getting in.... I fix alot of things on my boat but not the trolling motor....your choice....GL

TOOK THE BOLTS OUT OF MINN KOTA AND CANT GET THEM IN. 2 SHORT.

    Hi!
    Here's a schematic:
    Max 74 Bowmount
Make sure the end housing #7has a small mark in it pointed to the bottom (towards the skeg). The bolts can be a pain to line up!
Also make sure the armature is all the way forward it can go....past the brushes is the toughest part to get through and lined up. Keep it up, you'll get it!
    Best of luck
