It's runs for a second or so, then stops for a second, and then starts again. It has been doing this for an hour- my computer was off before that and it isn't hot.

The computer fan keeps surging. It runs for about a minute, stops and then starts up again. It seems like something is always running in the computer. I can hearing it doing something but am not sure what it is doing.

Yea it is a fan problem.Try cleaning the fan by blowing at it or use a small paint brush.Make sure your pc is turned off when you do this, also you havent made it clear whether its the case fan or power supply fan ..

I suspect it's just a fan failure or pending failure. Try cleaning it by blowing it out with air. If it's the case fan or CPU fan they are easy to replace, but if it's the Power Supply fan it's more complicated.

Hp pavilion a1330n fan runs, nothing else happens

A lot of HP Pavilion laptops suffered from improperly installed VGA chips on the motherboard which did not have properly thermal control. Overtime the chip will partially or entirely lose contact from the motherboard and you will experience this symptom.

This started with early 2007ish Pavilion DV2000, 6000, and 9000 series laptops, but has been an ongoing issue in several models since. A repair is possible, but NOT by baking your motherboard or using a thermal heatgun.

You need to take it to a lab with an infrared REFLOW machine to properly REFLOW the solder from the VGA chip to the motherboard. Going rates are from $75 to $150 flat for the job.

Good luck

Computer just shut down and won`t boot back up

You could have an overheating problemWhen the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

if it shuts down on it's one.. very like may be the cooling fan on top o fthe processor causing it to overheat... you may want to have that serviced by trained technitians as working on inside a laptop cd and replacing a fan is more critical than replacing a hdd, battery or upgrading/installing memory on your laptop.
