Stripped Gear on Liftmaster

How hard was it to replace the gear? How many hours did it take? Can an anyone do it? I was told by repairman he would charge me $150 to fix and that it would probably strip again in a year and that I should buy a new one from him. HELP

Replacing the gear with the right tools isn,t so bad all the final adjustmehts must be made. as for replacing the gear again in a year no way gear should last eight to nine years, but door nust be working easy by hand operation and lubed twice a year. I know this because I do this for a living

How handy are you. can anyone do is a silly question. a blind person with no hands could not do. you need a socket set, hammer,screwdriver/allen wrench. kit costs $25-30 dollors. Gears will last as long as originals, not one year. It will take you 2-3 hours for a first timer. Takes me 30 minutes to rebuild unit once I take down and 20-30 minutes to reinstall, if you can change a washer or install a faucet, you can do it. what do you lose vs. what can you save.

Sounds like the gears are stripped.

Open the housing and see if there are white plastic shavings inside.

If so

You can get a gear kit and fix it yourself $ 35 - $50

Or for around $ 125.00 get a pro to fix the problem and lube, adjust, service the door and opener.

You pretty much have to take the unit apart all the way - it's not a simple project but it is doable for a diyer with reasonable skills 1-2 hours.

Follow the instructions step by step and don't cheat by leaving the gear thats hard to get to. The wear pattern on it will chew up your new gear in a few months and you will be doing it all over again.

Hope this helps

I think buy a new one in better choice. For its old equipment, maybe you'll hard to find compatible spare part anymore. But its your choice, if you love your door so much, and if you can find the spare part, just change the gear would be okay.

Hope this help.

I can hear the motor "working" but the chain is not moving and so door will not open?

Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and I'm sure you will find it is stripped. The part number is 41A2817 and is available at any door opener service company. It comes with instructions.

Craftsmen garage door is not opening. It started

Your drive gear must be stripped. Remove the cover and you will most likely find lots of what looks like white sawdust and a stripped gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The part number is 41A2817 if you want to replace it and it comes with instructions. Available at any good door opener service company.

Unable to allign inner and outer trolley on a Craftsman garage door opener

You probably have a stripped gear. Take the cover off the opener and the bottom will be filled with white shavings and the gear will be missing teeth. You can repair with a liftmaster gear and sprocket kit.
