Refrigerator and freezer getting too cold

The refrigerator and freezer keep getting colder and colder. The temp in the freezer is below 0 degrees and the fridge is at 29 degrees. We replaced the timer defrost board last week for the same problem, but now it is doing the same thing again.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, it would seem that the thermostat control of the freezer and/or the refrigerator is stuck in the closed/on position. This could be brought about by a faulty thermostatic switch or the connectors/wires leading to it shorted or would appear shorted due to moisture that has turned to ice. Of course if the thermostats check out, then it would be the logic controller board that is faulty, specifically, the compressor motor relay or trigger.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

    Hi again,

Even if you already have rated the FixYa it is hoped that you would still be able to view this response.

Normally there are two separate thermostatic control for each of the freezer and the refrigerator sections.

Additionally, you might be able to get further insights from the original source of information here where it was copied from.

Hi,

The first thing to check is the overall internal refrigerator temperature (see the Appliance Accessories section for a refrigerator/freezer thermometer). The proper temperature should be between 35 and 42 degrees. Here are some things to try:

  • If your refrigerator temperature is closer to 35 degrees, try turning the temperature up slightly.

  • If you find that the temperature varies a lot from the top shelf to the bottom (where it is coldest), try putting produce and other sensitive products on a higher shelf.

  • If the temperature is too low and you can't make it warmer by adjusting the thermostat, you probably have a defective thermostat. If so, you need to replace it, because they cannot be repaired. Other possible problems are a leak in the sealed (refrigerant) system, cold air migration (in side-by-side models) or a defective air damper. These problems can be quite difficult to locate and correct, we recommend you contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

The food in the refrigerator freezes This is a common problem that often doesn't have a clear, permanent solution.

There's water dripping inside the refrigerator Self-defrosting refrigerators dispose of the water generated during the defrost cycle, usually via a tube or channel that directs the water to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. From the pan, the water normally evaporates. (See a more detailed explanation of this in the How Things Work section of our website).

If the tube or channel is clogged or obstructed, the water backs up and leaks into the inside of the refrigerator compartment. Then the water builds up at the bottom, inside of the refrigerator. When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel and allow the defrost water to flow down to the drain pan.

The refrigerator never cycles off The thermostat cycles the refrigerator on and off. The refrigerator normally runs as long as the temperature inside the refrigerator is higher than the set temperature. If the temperature inside the refrigerator is cold enough and the thermostat still does not cycle off, the thermostat may be defective. If so, you need to replace it, because it cannot be repaired. If the thermostat is not defective, you may have a problem with the sealed (refrigerant) system, in which case you should contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

Frig is turned down to low and everything is still freezing. Ice maker not making ice.

icemaker not working because to cold in freezer;water transfer tube frozen and will need to be deiced, but first must solve refrig. to cold, making freezer to cold, thermostat problem which is common it is a presure filled and in time can loose presure and will run colder, some have adjustment scew with arrows warmer or colder adust warmer and only turn a 1/4 turn or less until you get in middle of dail range. or replace thermostat. refrig. temp. should be 38 to 40 degrees frenhiet. freezer no colder then 0.

Freezer works great, but fridg. will not get below 50

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

Why does freezer get cold but not refrigerator side?

Check the freezer temp (available in most grocery and home improvement stores). The temp should be between 0-10 degrees F (not just barely below freezing).

Frige is cold, freezer is cold & freezing . . . Ice maker not making ICE.

Hi: As we don't (as in I) know the actual temp. in the freezer, this is a simple and free try. Cold is cold. The temp in the freezer has to be 0 degrees to make ice. They are thermally protected. A good guess for temp. is your ice cream. Is it rock hard? A lot of refrigerator thermometers are inaccurate. Just try setting your freezer colder. Ignore human nature and don't check the freezer every 30 Min's. You will never get to 0 degrees. I hope this helps, Jeff

Refrigerator side temp keeps dropping below freezing.

Set the freezer temp control to MAX cold and see if it improves.
If not replace the off/on thermostat.(cold control)

Freezer is freezing but fridge is not cold as it was

Sounds like defrost timer is not putting the refrigerator in defrost every 8 hours. You freezer should be below -5 degrees. Also the condenser beneath the refrigerator possibly needs cleaning. First slowly turn the defrost timer clockwise until freezer goes in defrost. You should hear the sound of crackling noise in freezer after about one minute into defrost. If timer does not come out of defrost or does not turn itself then replace it. Let me know what you find, Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer quits working

Solution Found! The problem is when the temperature surrounding the refrigerator in the garage falls to < 45 degrees, the thermostat regulating the refrigerator will not call for the compressor to kick in to provide cooling (it's temperature requirements are being met). Since there is no demand, the compressor will not cycle, which is how the freezer is kept cold, and the freezer eventually warms up to match the refrigerator temperature. Frigidaire makes a "Cold Kit" that I ordered and installed from RepairClinic.com for $22 (Item #: 1037646; Description: Garage kit). It's basically a strip heater that runs off the control power to warm the thermostat and causes the compressor to cycle once to twice a day to keep the freezer frozen. After installation, the refrigerator stays at 40-45 and the freezer stays around 0 degrees.
