DVD writer scratching discs?

Hey there. I have recently had a number of problems with what I suspect is my Dvd burner drive on my dell PC. I have two drives, one a dvd rom and the other a writer.

For a year and half I have been backing up hundreds of my dvds on this drive, but recently, despite the burns being 'successful', they judder and stop in many places when played back.

At first I suspected it was the media but it happened with different discs too. After the 9th burn that suffered the same fate I noticed that all the affected discs were scratched on the back after they came out of the drive. They were blemish free before they went in, and the source files they were burning off were fine too.

Could my drive have finally had it? Is it scratching and damaging my discs whilst burning?

If you have ever opened the DVD writer ? if so please try opening get some help at youtube and when you open it try cleaning the optical laser read/write head with isopropyl alcohol (very little) on a cotton swab or ear cleaning buds.they are very delicate use little force and wait till all liquid dries.also see for any dust like one mentioned which might have scratched the disc which rotates at high speed. Also lubricate moving parts with olive oil.very little otherwise these gather dust best of luck.If this does not help try replacing dvd writer

CD/DVD problem

It might be that the DVD's you are using are damaged / scratched or of the wrong format. Some DVD- burners won't take DVD+ dvd's for example.

Burner is detected but ...

Hello preto,

What you probably have is bad lens. This is the main reason why DVD/Cd drives stop reading discs. You will have to replace the lens and it will be all right.

Slow Writer

Hey there dhruvr, your problem is minor. Even though your DVD drive has max speed of 16X, the software you use to burn can vary this according to their default setting. ranging from 4-16 times. You can change these by opening the extra option boxes, when you are burning, or going into the settings for each of your burning programs. You should only have to do this once. It will remember your last setting. Good Luck!

LG GSA-4167B DVD Writer... PC restarts whenever any CD is inserted

What is happening is that the dvdrom firmware or the laser is failing and cannot read the disc; and because the pc is using all the system resources trying to do so; it appears that you cannot get anything to run, making it seem as if the hard drive is faulty also, though not the case. You will need to replace the drive if this is a common occurance, as the life of a dvd drive nowadays dependant on use is aprox 2 years, because as the prices come down so does the quality of the laser required to burn and read discs.

Dvd writer wont accept dvd-r

If you have posted the correct model of writer, then it only supports the writing of DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, but CD-R and CD-RW disc writing are supported, and it should play all forms of DVD, so it won't burn DVD-R and RW discs, but if it wont play all types then try a cd/dvd cleaner, but to be honest when writers start playing up the lens is normally faulting and a replacement drive will be required.

My SONY DRU-810A DVD Writer doesn't work with TDK DVD+RW Disc

some dvd brands dont work with all dvd writers, so your option is to try another make, if that works ok then it's not a writer fault it is just that the media make is not compatable. if you start to see problems with all makes of disc then the writer laser is faulty and a replacement drive neccasary.
