Coil is Freezing Up

I have a Maytag Model# MSD2758GEW Side by Side Fridge. The coil keeps freezing up. I had the repairman out who replaced several components but insisted the problem was not low freon. The problem was never fixed & now it's not in warranty. Now it only takes 24 hours to freeze up. I have to remove the cover plate and defrost with a hair dryer. What can I do. The fridge is only 3 years old and I paid 1800.00 for it.

MWKT, did the service tech replace the adaptive defrost board? By your post it sounds like a defrost problem. Check out the pic, this is the adaptive defrost board. I find that the heater and bi-metal usually don't fail on these models and the board is the culprit. back

The fridge keeps freezing over

The evaporator coil is freezing, there could be a number of reasons.

a) drain line is clogged... defrost the fridge and shoot short bursts of compressed air into the drain to clear the clog
b) the defrost sensor on the evaporator coil is faulty... replace the sensor
c) the freezer is so PACKED as to impede air flow... stop stuffing your freezer
d) the defrost timer, defrost coil, etc. is faulty... replace as required

You could defrost your evaporator coil by turning off the fridge for several hours with the doors open, blow dryer, heat gun, etc... depending on skill level

Coil frozen over, freezer not freezing and fridge inefficient. msd2758gew

The newest defrost feature in modern fridges is the electronic adaptive defrost control board. has one put this adaptive defrost style of fridge into defrost, short with a small screwdriver between L1 and test on the adaptive defrost board, wait 3 seconds and you should hear a "click" noise from the relay and the fridge will shut off and go through a defrost cycle. .

The evaportor coil in my side by side fridge keeps freezing up. I use the hair dryer to melt the frost off it. This happens about every 48 hours.

Your defrost circuit has failed. Typical problem is the heating element fails. It is mounted to your coil. Use a meter to check if the heating element is open, if they are, replacing the heating element should solve your problem.

Refrigerator is not very cold. Freezer is not

Our side by side did the same, started because the cooling coils on the bottom (although cleaned regularly), still overworked due to build up of dust and especially pet hair. The heating coil in the freezer compartment which prevents ice buildup in modern (frost-free) units kicks on full time and the compressor can't compensate, thus your perishables start to thaw. Luckily we were still under warranty. hope this helps you at least start diagnosing the problem.

Freezer not freezing

Check the back wall of the freezer section for signs of frost build-up. If the freezer coil is frozen from a fault in the defrost system your refrigerator will be the first to show signs of not cooling.

Freezer keeps frosting up real fast.

Well, the defrosting system is crapped out. Check defrost timer, defrost heater, and defrost thermostat to locate faulty component. Read more about diagnosing defrost system failures.
