If it looks like it is damaged then replacing is the only solution but if it looks like some dirt got stuckup on it then it can be cleaned with a damp cloth.no problem.

Actually you should cry cleaning the recording / playing head first. There is a special tape that does it of you can use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Other than that No.. you'll need to change it.

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

please state the age of your devices. It can help a great lot in solving your problems. The lines that you get aren't continuous, are they? They appear to be going up and down, are different sizes and shift as the tape plays, yes? well, this is simple. You need to clean your recording head.

if you dont have time to get it fixed, tap on the side where the tape goes in. I had to tap it a couple of times before everything started work fine again.

Pink or grey horizontal lines on video download or viewing

I have the same issue and have for over a year (haven't had the time to send it to Canon for a few weeks to analyze, but have cleaned it numerous times). But I can tell you that the problem is internittent and the recordings are fine. Eventually, don't know the remedy, but it will suddenly stop doing that and I can download fine, and watch on camera fine. When it does happen, I just keep recording. It never shows up permanently. I re-tyr downloading or viewing and about the 3rd or 3th time (let it sit for a few hours between) it is normal!

BLACK Lines and having to reset.

i assume that the 'black lines' are 5 bars of dark video spaced equally across the screen. this is a symptom of dirty heads. use a mini DV cleaning tape, and the problem should go away.

Probably you had not used your camera for a long time, keep it running for sometime, this may solve the problem.

you should buy a head cleaning tape that fits your tape deck on your camera. They should be at any store that sells electronics, or a general store, such as Wal Mart. Follow the instructions. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what to do.
