Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator
A friend gave me this calculator and it's way over my head. my son turned it on....and I can't get the little black square to stop blinking.
i want to shut it off .
As I understand it, you are simply trying to turn your TI-83 calculator OFF. Press the [2nd] key, then press the [ON] key (its second function is "off"). Sometimes you have to press "off" twice.
By the way, if you just leave it on for a while, it shuts itself off.
(One of the nice things about the TI-83 is that when you turn it back on, it remembers what you were doing on the screen before you shut it off.)

Sorry, but you cannot. That is the cursor, and it is equivalent to the cursor you see on your computer when typing text. You can change the resolution of the screen by pressing 2ND then the up and down keys, but this will change the resolution of EVERYTHING that is on the screen, not just the cursor.
