Screen goes black after windows XP logo, then no response.

After turning power on, the HP logo flashes on the screen, followed a short time later by the Windows XP logo, followed by a single pointer that lasts on a black screen for 10-15 seconds. The screen then goes black and is unresponsive to any input. During all of this the HD light flickers on & off (even after the screen goes black). I've tried F8 with various settings, but no luck. My guru friends have tried reseating ram, emerg. dics, checked fans, ac adapter, etc., all to no solution. Suggestions?

I would suggest checking your hard drive to see whether or not it has a bad sector on it.

This is usually caused by a software error ,imcompatability or conflict .you need to uninstall the last software..if was done via win update it could be near to impossible to determine what was last installed requiring you to reinstall windows ..unless its bad sectors on hd reinstall or repair os and it should sort prob out.
when you reinstall os; system will not find/detect wireless, blutooth, possibly modem and possibly video until the programs/drivers for them are installed..this is normal so download the software/drivers and save them to disk(saves a lot of headaches)

first of all check your monitor. it would be the best if you can plug some other monitor just to check... if your monitor is OK then probably you VGA is bad and you`ll have to change it.

HI yellowlizard

these things always happen when you turn off your computer the wrong way (turn off the power directly from suiz or short circuit occurs) or damage to the operating system in general.
What you need to do is to repair your operating system using the operating system CD, do the chkdsk / r and fixboot.

Not a problem it happens just go to hp.com download the bios driver and use it on windows xp it will not work with anyother windows and run it with your ipaq connected to the pc. This will reinstall the complete bios software and bring it back to factory.

The laptop doesn't boot up always.

I would try the following:
1. Remove the battery completely. If the computer boots properly several times in a row, then the battery may be causing the power supply to do strange things.
2. If you have experience removing laptop components, try removing the hard drive. Because you say the screen goes black (I assume the system powers off) sometimes after the HP logo, I doubt its Windows or a software issue.
3. If HP has a diagnostic CD you can boot to, try that.
4. It may be the power supply acting up. If it charges the battery, and if you can boot to Windows with the battery, try getting a new power supply.
5. Otherwise, it may be the motherboard of the laptop.
