Re: flash drive ports on teh fron wont work on pc
If your system is USB 1 rather than USB 2 then some flash drives will not work. Not all usb 2 flashdrives are backwards compatible. My kids flasdrives will only work on my usb2 ports & will not work at all on my wife's computer which has the older usb 1 ports.

You could easily pick up an aftermarket USB PCI card, which will give you 2-4 USB ports that have their own logic chip. These are quite easy to install and very inexpensive. Another option would be a front-mounted USB hub, which would attach to the USB header on your mainboard. They come in 3.5" size (to go in a floppy drive slot) or 5.25" for CD/DVD size slots. Either of these should work fine as long as the rest of the PC is OK. If not, they are pretty much universal, so you could put in your next computer. (if it didn't work). Good luck!
To test the functionality of the usb ports in front of the computer
1. Insert another flash drive or another usb device like a usb mouse on front the computer
2. If it detect the usb device that means 2 things flash drive might be bad and the front usb port is working
3. If it does not, It means that the flash drive might be bad or the usb port is not connected to the front panel of the computer
4. Try also inserting the flash drive at the back of the computer see if the usb drive is detected in all ports
5. Check the BIOS for any usb port associativity
So we have two problems one your sound is not working and two your usb drive is not detecting any connected devices, correct?
Starting with the sound simply use a friends computer to burn the audio driver onto a cd. Next install the driver on your machine.
Problem two the usb. Remove the flash drive and try plugging in any other usb device such as a printer or camer or cell phone and see if windows says found new hardware. You don't need to install it this will simply tell you if your usb port is functioning or has a problem. if you do get a found new hardware message then your usb port is functioning and may only have a problem seeing your flash drive. Try uninstalling the usb port in System Properties. Right click on My Computer then left click on Properties. Now click on the Hardware tab. Now click on Device manager. Now go to the bottom where the usb devices are and uninstall all usb devices and when your done restart the machine. See if you can use your flash drive now. Other wise check your bios settings for the usb devices to see that they are infact set correctly and if you cant do this take it to your local pc repair shop and they can do this for you.
Hope this helps.
If you are using Win98 the problem is the USB ports themselves. You must locate and install USB drivers to make them functional. Other than that the USB should reconise the flash pen after a few minutes. Now if it see it, to store in the drive, Save the information to a file/folder and then right click and choose SEND TO and pick the letter drive that is your flash pen and that will do it. If you can do drag and drop open the window that has your info and open a window that shows your pen drive left click and hold it down a drag it to the pen drive - when you see the + just release the left click and it should be on the pen drive. Hope this helps you, good luck, please leave a rating, thank you kindly
An option that you could do is to plug the flash drive in the back of the computer. The reason is because flash drives derive power from the USB port itself unlike other usb devices that you are using may have their own power or because the USB port in front does not give as much power as the one from the back.
Check to see if the back ports behave the same way with the flash drive, If so then it appears to be a software issue. If not...look closely at the pins inside the ports and make sure none are bent. If attempting to straighten pins be sure to power system off first. Also check inside the case to see that the front USB connectors are secure. Also
If this is in all pc's it is a good indication a usb port on the the pc pr laptop has put out more than the 5volts that is normal and burned out the LED on the flash drive.
If the drive is still working, save data as soon as possible, it may fail at any time.
This had happened to me when I purchased an emachines someone else had assembled/upgraded. they connected the usb front header backwards and I fried my flash drive. the drive got hot, led was no good but it worked for about 5 min. on another machine before it was toast.
