Question about Craftsman 3 gal. Air Compressor, 1.5 hp, Horizontal k

1 Answer

Compressor will not pressurize

I have a 3 gal, 1.5 HP compressor with oil crankcase. Was using compressor when compressor kicked in to recharge tank, halfway through the recharge heard a "pop" sound, but the compressor kept on working, except it no longer continued to pressurize the tank. Once the air in the tank was exhausted, it did not replenish it. Checked the tank valve, and the regulator, but could not find problem.

A simple check to see of the compressor is pumping is to remove the intake air filter and feel for suction. If the pump is working properly you will feel suction at the intake and the compressor will unload (speed up) when you restrict the opening. If no suction remove the head and valve plate and check the piston and reed valves for damage. Replace parts as needed. Parts are not expensive for small compressors. Good luck, enjoy.

There is no oil tank. The oil is in the crankcase of the compressor

I have a 3 gal 1 hp air compressor and it will only build pressure to 27 lbs.

If it makes hesitation sounds just before shutting off, you need to oil the compressor as per the manual. This is the most common problem.
If it is kicking on and off normally, you need to adjust the pressure relay. The instructions are under the cover.

The tank fills with air, but the motor doesn't shut off. It continues to run.

Pressure switch is stuck on, dont use this until its fixed!!!!!, you could overfill the tank with excess air, it could be adjustable or the switch may need cleaning/replacing.

Does it run? Does it stop running? Does the pressure gauge read anything at all? Is there a regulator on it? Can you take the reg off? A bunch of things to check, get it running and let me know what you find, and I will try to tell you what's next.

Check drain as it might not be closed all the way, you may have to set the regulator and there could be a bad switch diaphragm.....

Air compressor struggles to start but eventually starts

If the proplem only happens after the initial start-up with the tank empty, then your back flow valve is sticking and preventing the compressor from kicking over imediately. If it does it all the time, even when the tanik is empty, then your capacitor on the motor is not charging correctly.

WILL NOT BUILD PRESSURE

Many craftsman compressor are built by champbell hausfeld using a dry type of cylinder and piston (no oil, no crankcase). If dry type, check for worn cylinder and piston ring. Pieces of the vinyl ring can jamb between the reed valves in the head causing air to escape from the intake. If your compressor has a crankcase and oil, check for broken reed valves in head. Spray soap solution on hoses, checkvalve, drainvalve, and fittings to check for leaks. Most likely problem is reed valves broken or open. Parts are available from sears or match parts to chpower.com. enjoy
