Dell Inspiron 6000 (DVD drive came installed)
Roxio Easy Media Creator 10
burns music&data cds ok, though sometimes have got bluescreen errors (never figured that out really either, most often seemed something to do with an old version of Roxio and trying to save photos to CD; doesn't happen that often)
according to Sony my firmware is up to date
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling
I'm using appropriate blank DVD

If that fails then my suspicion is that either 1) the drive has failed or more likely 2) because you don't have any DVD burning software, windows can't understand the blank DVD-RW disk. This basic packet-burning software installed with XP CANNOT write to DVD disks.
However there is a bit more to it than that - the Microsoft CD burning software (which is a cut down Roxio product) cannot co-exist with any other packet burning software (e.g. DLA, In-CD or simuilar) so if one of those is installed you have to DISABLE the MS CD burning capability on the drive settings tab. Even worse, Internet Explorer 8 is not compatible with DLA - which is included in quite a few CD/DVD suites including many of the later Roxio versions
My advice would be 1) un-install any CD or DVD burning software on the machine 2) disable the MS CD burning 3) run that Microsoft patch 4) Install some DVD burning software but DON'T install the packet writing software part of it
Note that after installing that patch you may also have to reinstall any DVD playing software
If the DVD is unreadable by several devices then the DVD disk was burned wrong and is nothing more than you can do.
Assure that you have a region set on your DVD players and a certified DVD playback software on PC. Windows Media Player 10 should be enough if the disk is still unreadable will remain unreadable and ony speciall software with raw access will read it but this is not a solution for you. I use Nero 7 for burning CDs and DVDs and never had a problem. Maybe when you burned the DVD you set a wrong regional code or you choosed a wrong DVD format that is unknown to your DVD players.
Have you burned DVD ever? If you don't do that, I teach you how to finish it with an easy way. First, make sure that DVD burner has been installed on your computer, and you should insert one blank and no content
DVD disc. Than you should donwnload Aneesoft DVD Creator , this software will help you me burning DVD
with easy way.

are u copying the disc on the fly i mean directly from dvd rom to dvd rw it sometimes generate this error when reading drive stops giving data due to some error and suddenly bcoz of that the writing drive leavve the session un closed and give an error the solution is first copy ur disc on the hard drive and then copy it on another disc on the fly copying is not safe otherwise also try this
pls try to clean the lens of the drive as follows
due to dusty environment and excessive use lens gets dusty and then have problems in reading or writing dvd 's and cd's
the dvd tray u can see that shiny eye like thing try cleaning th lens
gently in round movement with a tissue paper or very soft cloth used to
clean lcd screens or cotton bud good quality see if it works , other wise ur DVD drive lens got
weak from use now adays service centers are getting tons of them
everyday for replacements
u can try that software thing as well but i dont think it will solve ur problem
I am not posting a solution, but may be the same problem. I have dell inspiron 510m with DVD - RW sony A 56 It had burnt one DVD till now, but it can NOT burn any more DVDs. I have tried burning using windows XP-SP2, Nero 6, Nero 8, burn my files 3.01 BUT no use. The only thing I got is different error messages. I changed many types of DVD-Rom, from sony, benq..trying to rule out the storge media itself as source of error, but again no use. Astonishingly, it works a CD-ROM Burner very well. Any suggestions?
Ok. What I am going to suggest may seem like a daunting task but if you are careful and do only what I suggest you should be ok. The first thing you are going to have to do is manually make a change to the Windows registry to fix the permissions.
1. Fix registry permissions
a. Click on "Start" choose "Run", then type "regedit" and click "OK".
b. In the Registry Editor, click on the "+" next to "HKEY_Local_Machine".
c. Now click on the "+" next to "Software".
d. Right-click on the key (folder) called "Roxio" and choose "Permissions".
e. Make sure that "Administrators" and "System" have checkmarks for "Full Control" - "Allow".
f. If you had to add those checkmarks, click on "Apply".
g. Click on "Advanced".
h. Put a checkmark in "Replace permission entries on all child objects with the entries shown here that apply to child objects".
i. Click "OK".
j. Click "OK" again.
k. Now close the Registry Editor
Next, you will have to uninstall the Roxio software.
1. Remove Roxio Easy Media Creator 7
a. Go to Start--->Settings--->Control Panel--->Add/Remove Programs
b. Select Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and select "Remove"
c. Once the uninstall is complete, reboot the computer.
2. Reinstall Roxio Easy Media Creator 7
a. Insert the CD and install as you did before and then reboot.
If you have any issues uninstalling the Roxio, go to the following link to download the Microsoft Cleanup Utility...
Run the utility after the unistallation attempt and then reboot and reinstall Roxio.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
