The wire color going to L1 should be black or red and white would be neutral

If you had a fault in your neutral wire the voltage may have raised to near 220 volts and fried the circuitboard. Replave the circuitboard or replace the thermistor on it. Double check the voltage and the connections where it is wired under the dishwasher.

Black and white wires to grey cord

Use a continuity tester to see which wire goes to each prong on the cord end. Black goes to line one, white to neutral. The neutral prong is the bigger of the 2.

So, you have power on both sides of the fuse, huh? How did you test that? Did you use one of those voltage detectors that light up when they get near a "hot" wire? If so, then I would tell you to make sure your white return line (neutral line) is NOT hot, because if it is, then you probably have a bad connection in your junction box for your white (neutral) line. But if all that's fine, then you EITHER have a bad control console, or a bad control board, and I would bet it's the control board.

Is it safe to use a 3 prong dryer cord on my 2004 Kenmore Calypso dryer? I moved to an older home with a 3prong outlet.

It is safe as long as it is wired correctly. The following link explains the differences between 3 and 4 prong configurations:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575913-installing_a_220_vac_appliance_cord

Just make sure to match the corresponsing wire colors at the terminal block in the back of the dryer:

RED - HOT (120 VAC)
BLACK - HOT (120 VAC)
WHITE - NEUTRAL (0 VAC)
GREEN - Ground

In a 3 wire configuration the Neutral (White) and Ground (Green) wires are terminated together at the terminal block.

NOTE: If the wires are not color coded, the outer two wires (left and right) are the HOT leads. The center conductor is Neutral.

The other alternative is to have an electrician install a 4-wire receptacle in your home.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

The new four prong has a green, white, red, and black wires. The cord we removed is not color coded. Not sure what goes where besides green

red and black wires go to L1 and L2 power terminals and the white wire goes to the N- terminal "neutral" terminal and green is the metal unit case safety ground wire

Does not work on 50Hz kenmore elite dish washer

If it was built for 60Hz AC power (American), it will not work on 50Hz power. The Hz, is the number of cycles per second, the electricity makes. If your motor & controls are wired for 60cycles, they will not get the proper electrical supple to work on 50 cycles. AC voltage goes from neutral to positive to neutral to negative to neutral, (one cycle) according to the country you are in. Some countries also use 230 or 240 volts, instead of 120 volts.

Electrical cable for the power pulled out of machine

Ground wire will be GREEN or bare copper wire. White neutral wire will go to chrome colored AC terminal. BLACK(or maybe brown or other darker color) hot wire goes to brass colored terminal.

If terminals on dishwasher are not chrome(white metal) and brass(yellow metal) colored, then you must look for other ID on Dishwasher side. If terminals or wires on dishwasher side are not a different color, then it does not matter which of the two AC wire, neutral or hot, goes to which. The ground wire is the safety wire against against shock from fault hot wire getting to chassis of washer.

Humming sounds more like dishwasher is in the middle of a timing cycle, but I could be wrong and it is sometimes best to find someone to look at your washer when electrical wires are being hooked up.

IF THE WIRES ARE RED, BLACK, WHITE, AND GREEN,
THE WHITE WIRE GOES TO THE CENTER TERMINAL.
THE GREEN WIRE ATTACHES TO A GROUND SCREW ON THE BACK OF THE DRYER. UNHOOK THE WIRE GOING FROM THE CENTER TERMINAL TO THE GROUND SCREW TO ISOLATE THE ELECTRICAL NEUTRAL FROM EARTH GROUND ( THE WHITE WIRE FROM THE GREEN ONE)
THE RED AND BLACK WIRES GO ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT OUTER TERMINALS ON THE TERMINAL BLOCK. THOSE TWO ARE INTERCHANGABLE.
