Black bar on right side of screen

Sounds like the screen is going bad. Isolate the problem by plugging an external monitor to the laptop. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker to plug to the laptop. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If the Borrowed monitor does not show the black bar on the right side of the screen that proves your video card is ok and the problem is your lcd screen. If the borrowed monitor shows the same black bar on the right side of the screen it means your video card inside the computer has the issue.

The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

MY LAPTOP SCREEN DOES NOT LITE UP

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

Horizontal thick bar lines on the bottom of laptop monitor

Take it back to the retailer. Unless it is more than a year old. The graphics chip or screen has failed.

Vertial yellow line appeared on screen of my inspiron 1420

Try connecting an external monitor to the 15 pin VGA plug located on the right side. You may have to initiate the external monitor by holding down the Function left of the Space bar and depressing the associated key, (it should have a little picture of a monitor).
If the display is fine on the external monitor then you have a bad LCD display. If you still get the yellow line on the external monitor your motherboard (system board) needs to be replaced.

Have pavilion xh635 with win xp. tried to hook up video to tv. In video properties selected enable monitor 2. laptop screen went blank and tv in vga mode showed empty desk top backround. Cant get laptop...

Take a look at the checkpoints under the resolution bar. In order to come to your laptops main monitor you have to select "screen 1" and check the main screen check mark. In case you want to use the tv screen as an expansion monitor you have to choose "screen 2" and check the "Extend to this monitor" checkpoint.

Adding a monitor to ibm thinkpad using ubuntu

When you connext an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor then power up the laptop. The video infomation should automatically divert to the extermal monitor. You can toggle between the external monitor and the LCD screen by pressinf the blue Fn key + F7 key.
If you cannot get an image on the external monitor, then it is likely the video card is faulty and you can fix it by replacing the motherboard, but what is the point when the screen is broken also.

Dual or mirror monitors

Their is a button located on the 1-9 keys, it looks like a little monitor. Maybe 2 monitors.

Hold down your FN key (Function) and press that button, that will turn on the svga connector. Also if you press it again it should keep both monitors on, and again will switch back to only the LCD.
