Compaq Presario 2800 hard drive not recognized

I tried to switch out the hard drive on my laptop the other day and I couldn't get it to work.  So I put in the old one again.  When I tried to turn it on I got the error ''non-system disk or disk error''.  There is no disk anywhere that would not be allowing it to boot.  I thought it might be missing files so I tried to install the operating system again since I don't need anything that's on there but when it gets to the part where it asks me where to install it, there is no hard drive.  So it doesn't recognize it although it is plugged in snugly.  Please help me some one!  Thank you!

I'm trying to install vista, but the computer doesn't recognize the driver.  I don't know if I'm not doing it right.  I saved the file onto my USB drive and when Vista prompts me for the driver, I browse for it and the folder appears but not the file.  What am I doing wrong?

  • stepht319 Dec 21, 2008

What are the drive controllers components file extension, so that I know if its really showing right?  And, yes, I have been unzipping the files.

I tried it on a USB stick and it works.  The OS installation recognizes the drivers that you gave me but they are not the drivers that it needs.  Do you know of any other one that I might be able to use?  The hard drive is a hitachi travelstar, model: IC25N040ATCS05-0.  40 gb ata/ide 5400 rpm.  I know that that is more info than what you need but just in case.  :)  anyways, thanks for everything.

I figured it out. Firstly, the drive is EIDE not SATA so thats why the drivers weren't working. Secondly, apparently I mishandled the drive when I took it out for the first time because the drive is dead. I switched it out with one that I knew was working, and it was fine. So thank you so much for trying but I've got it. :) Thanks!

I finally figured it out. The hard drive was blown. And of course, being dead, the computer couldn't find it. Thanks for all your help.

I think you have a sata drive here.
If so you need to install sata drivers for set-up to recognise the disc.
Download the drivers from manufacturers site:
use link below (I know its HP but its the same model different badge):

When installing XP press F6 at first set up screen (you are prompted - look at the bottom of the blue screen) and then later you are prompted for the drivers

You need to be able to use or attach a floppy drive for this and the sata drivers obviously need to be on the floppy disc.

You could try placing hem on a usb stick and setting the bios to read from it a second boot option

Hard to say but try a clean memory stick, nothing else on it, save the contents of the folder to the stick ie all the sata drive controllers components are seen.

The link I directed you to sends you a ZIP/RAR file. I assume you are unzipping it and using the contents? if you are not then its no wonder it cannot be found/used- its still in compressed form!

If you are not unzipping it then download a copy of WINRAR (you can easily find an evaluation copy to use), unzip it to a the default folder suggested (note where it is) and use the contents on your usb

I have just downloaded and opened the contents myself. Clicking on the HP icon sp36131 will download the contents into the following folder.

This is designed for use with a floppy disc but I suspect that loading all the contents of the folder onto you usb will do the same, Not sure but try it. Otherwise beg borrow a usb floppy drive and load the contents onto that

What you can do is to reseat the hard drive on your inspiron laptop. Here is the link where you can download or learn how to reseat the hard drive

If that does not work, make sure that your hard drive is detected in BIOS. if it is not detected in BIOS, then we can assume that the hard drive is broken.
Hope this helps

My hp compaq nc4400 does not detect its hdd

you could try this it sometimes work

turn off laptop and unplug power cord
turn laptop upside down
find the panel underneath that holds the hard drive usually 2 screws
remove panel and remove the hard drive

If you are not sure how to remove the hard drive ( not difficult )

turn laptop up correct way and try to restart laptop
it wont start up because you have removed the hard drive
now switch off again

turn upside down again
replace the hard drive
replace the panel
turn up correct way
and try to restart the laptop again

if this dont work
now turn off and on again pressing the F8 tab a few times to see if it takes you into repair options
and try the back to last known good configurations
or try some of the other repair options
hope you get it sorted

many thanks

Try taking out the hard drive and putting it in an external hard drive enclosure to see if the hard drive and operating system is ok. If you can not access the hard drive then you should try installing a new hard drive and operating system.

How old is the laptop and is it sued a lot. Is it left running 24 hours a day.

Hard drives fail all of the time and it sounds like yours died.

No icon on the desk top. Was working but disappeared for some reason.

I had the very same problem. My computer stopped recognising the drive. On the other hand I had it working quite a long time. I suspected it was just overworked. So I switched it off, let it cool down, ( I used an old admin trick and put it in the fridge for a few minutes, in a plastic bag), restarted the computer and connected and powered up the drive. And Voila! It's working great again. I don't know if they have some overheating switch but this worked for me.

Good Luck!

External Hard drive = possible shortage???

Could be the problem is with the case, not the actual hard drive which is inside the case. Try taking the screws out and removing the hard drive from the case, put it into ***********'s external case. If it works there, you can go online and find another hard drive external case (just get the case only).

No Hard Disc found after crash

Compaq uses F10 at boot to initiate the recovery program resident on the hard drive partition normally called "Recovery". If you cannot initiate the hard drive at boot then press F1 to get to setup and see if the hard drive is recognized there. If it is not then you will have to troubleshoot the hard drive.
If you have another laptop to try the hard drive out or a laptop to IDE hard drive adapter  (cheap) to connect to a desktop computer as a slave drive you will either verify that the hard drive is bad or it is good and a boot sector problem is at hand. Also if you can get the drive recognized as a slave drive you can either rescue data or format the drive.
These are preliminary steps so post again when you have more information. Steve Medley
