I tried to switch out the hard drive on my laptop the other day and I couldn't get it to work. So I put in the old one again. When I tried to turn it on I got the error ''non-system disk or disk error''. There is no disk anywhere that would not be allowing it to boot. I thought it might be missing files so I tried to install the operating system again since I don't need anything that's on there but when it gets to the part where it asks me where to install it, there is no hard drive. So it doesn't recognize it although it is plugged in snugly. Please help me some one! Thank you!
I think you have a sata drive here.
If so you need to install sata drivers for set-up to recognise the disc.
Download the drivers from manufacturers site:
use link below (I know its HP but its the same model different badge):
http://www.driversdown.com/ViewDownloadUrl.asp?ID=107574&brNum=3&show=0
When installing XP press F6 at first set up screen (you are prompted - look at the bottom of the blue screen) and then later you are prompted for the drivers
You need to be able to use or attach a floppy drive for this and the sata drivers obviously need to be on the floppy disc.
You could try placing hem on a usb stick and setting the bios to read from it a second boot option
Hard to say but try a clean memory stick, nothing else on it, save the contents of the folder to the stick ie all the sata drive controllers components are seen.
BUT:-
The link I directed you to sends you a ZIP/RAR file. I assume you are unzipping it and using the contents? if you are not then its no wonder it cannot be found/used- its still in compressed form!
If you are not unzipping it then download a copy of WINRAR (you can easily find an evaluation copy to use), unzip it to a the default folder suggested (note where it is) and use the contents on your usb
I have just downloaded and opened the contents myself. Clicking on the HP icon sp36131 will download the contents into the following folder.
C:\swsetup\SP36131
This is designed for use with a floppy disc but I suspect that loading all the contents of the folder onto you usb will do the same, Not sure but try it. Otherwise beg borrow a usb floppy drive and load the contents onto that

I'm trying to install vista, but the computer doesn't recognize the driver. I don't know if I'm not doing it right. I saved the file onto my USB drive and when Vista prompts me for the driver, I browse for it and the folder appears but not the file. What am I doing wrong?
What are the drive controllers components file extension, so that I know if its really showing right? And, yes, I have been unzipping the files.
I tried it on a USB stick and it works. The OS installation recognizes the drivers that you gave me but they are not the drivers that it needs. Do you know of any other one that I might be able to use? The hard drive is a hitachi travelstar, model: IC25N040ATCS05-0. 40 gb ata/ide 5400 rpm. I know that that is more info than what you need but just in case. :) anyways, thanks for everything.
I figured it out. Firstly, the drive is EIDE not SATA so thats why the drivers weren't working. Secondly, apparently I mishandled the drive when I took it out for the first time because the drive is dead. I switched it out with one that I knew was working, and it was fine. So thank you so much for trying but I've got it. :) Thanks!
I finally figured it out. The hard drive was blown. And of course, being dead, the computer couldn't find it. Thanks for all your help.
