Do you have a voltmeter? The first thing I would check is to see if you are getting 19VDC coming out of the charger. The on then off when you have the battery in sounds like your battery is almost out of juice and the fact that nothing happens when you plug it in without the battery indicates to me that your power adapter is not working.
OverheatingWhen the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail. A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust. Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan. If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.
I assume there is something wrong with power supply...Get an electric meter and test the adapter for dc output..I think the bit that connect to the laptop may be worn out and hence losing connection..Try to play with the adapter end when connecting to the laptop and hold on firmly on it and watched if any light comes on.If it stays for more than 2 sec the you know it is faulty..That is an alternate option is you don't have a meter..
try to boot into safe mode, to do this restart the pc and as it boots hit F8 repeatedly, this will bring a sub menu up and choose safe mode, when in safe mode perform a system restore and take it back a week or so

Ive had the same problem with one of my laptops and i found out that sometimes the computer wont start because the cooling fan wont work u see when the cooling fan is broken theres something in the computer a magnet of somesort that wont let it boot because it will overheat if stayed on too long this might not be the problem but if it is i would take t to a computer place and have them fix it before it overheats or put one in urself and get on off google just type in acer 5100 cooling fans if u have experience with computers hope this helps noah
