Can't access drive from My Computer

Just got a Toshiba portable hdd (MK4026GAX). Connected up everything looks ok on device manager, shows as working correctly both under disk drives and usb controllers, checked for updated drivers but got the newest installed. Problem is the drive does not show on My Computer. What do i need to do to access the drive? Any help greatly appreciated (in dummy speak if poss, i'm pretty pc illiterate)

Sometimes an additional drive doesn't show up because there is no free letter, especially if you are on a network. From Disk Management (right click on My Computer, Manage) if you see your drive there, try assigning it a letter. Or disconnect other drives that are mapped. Typically an external device wants to be "next" after your hard drive (usually c:) and CD-ROM (usually d:)

How do I start a manual backup with a Toshiba Convio 500GB HDD? Model number is 593400-A.

windows OS? what?
manual backup?
what are you doing? backing up data?

we can back up vast ways today.
1: to external HDD, (bingo?)
2: to DVD burner
3: to a home server
4: to the cloud or to a private FTP server (i use latter)
5: USB stick.

all you do is drag and drop files.
I looked up your model, and is an external drive."portable"
so plug it in, see it in program manager,? you must see it or its dead.
is this the first time using this device,? unstated.
if it works on other PC, then it works.
it may not on this PC if your USB ports are weak. no PC stated.
try all USB ports yet?
does it show up in disk manager, ? it must
if you have USB errors in device manager, then we fix this first.
all drivers for USB must be good on this PC
the pc must be connected to the internet or PnP will be 1/2 dead.

when you plug in any USB device, the PC goes, (bingdong) for USB going online, and then shows up in diskmanagers.
if the drive is new, you must assign drive letter to the disk in disk manager, then it needs to be formatted, if virgin disk.
ok?

Try using HDD Regenerator to check and possibly to repair the disk. HDD Regenerator allows to repair bad sectors on damaged hard disk drives without losses of the existing data. http://ulozto.sk/xzjZ2Bd/hdd-regenerator-1-71-keygen-h33t-murtajiz-zip

When I plug in the Toshiba HardDrive, it doesn't show on the drives list. I inserted it before and it showed just fine. I even stored some files inside it. but now it's not showing at all.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Yes, all IDE 2.5-inch disk-drives use the same pin-out. SATA-interface disk-drives have quite-different interfaces than IDE drives, but all SATA devices share a common interface.

Replacement hdd for a Toshiba MK4026GAX (ATA)

Any brand-new ATA hard-drive (you probably won't find any new hard-drive smaller than 80GB) will be compatible. Pay a few extra dollars for a 7200 RPM drive (rather than 4200 or 5400 RPM).

Usb port detected but i cannot access the portable hdd because there is no displayed ickon of hdd in the my computer page

Is this on a Windows system?
If so, try right-clicking the My Computer icon, and in the popup menu select Manage. This will bring up computer management, where you can go to disk management. In disk management check if you see the drive, if it has a partition and drive letter.
See here for more ideas and details.
