Just as you can't copy commercially made video tapes to another VCR due to Macrovision anti-copy encoding, the same applies to making copies to DVD. DVD recorders cannot bypass the anti-copy signal on commercial VHS tapes or DVDs. If a DVD recorder detects the anti-copy encoding on a commercial DVD it will not start the recording and display some sort of message either on screen or on its LED front panel display that it detects the anti-copy code or that it is detecting an unusable signal. A DVD recorder can be used to copy any homemade videos, such as camcorder videos and videos made from TV shows, and can also copy Laserdiscs, and other non-copyprotected video material. Also, remember that a DVD recorder also has a built-tuner for recording TV programming directly. The tuner can be programmed to record a series of programs on different days and times, much like a VCR. However, if you are recording a non-copy protected DVD to a DVD recorder you can record any of the video content, provided you click on the menu and start the video segments running and you have enough time space on the disc. DVD recorders function like VCRs in that they can record incoming video signals -- however, they do not automatically copy all the contents of the DVD - for instance, you cannot copy the interactive menu functions of a non-copy protected commercial DVD. A DVD recorder creates its own menu functions, it will not duplicate the function menu from a another DVD. In addition, most DVD recorders also have digital video inputs (IEEE-1394, Firewire, i-Link) that allow users of digital camcorders to digitally transfer their audio and video direct to DVD in real time.

To copy copyrighted VHS into DVD you need to connect DVD to VHS using a device called external encoder, that connects between VHS recorder and DVD writer.
You cannot copy them using a single machine.

Can I transfer video tapes onto CD's

A lot depends on what type of video tape you use and where do you want to play the DVDs (CDs are for audio recording only). If tape is compact VHS then you can buy a simple DVD Recorder VHS VCR combo player and transfer across easily provided you have the compact VHS cassette module.

For other type of video camera tapes you will have to try other methods like connect camera with tape to a DVD recorder and directly burn the DVDs. You can buy attachments and software for PC but I have found these very cumbersome to work with.

Maplin Electronics have a motorised VHS-C Cassette adaptor that will enable you to view any camcorder tape on a standard VHS. If that is any help priced around £15.00.

Conversion vhs to dvd

I can only offer you 1 option for this case.
In converting the VHS video tape to DVD you can use computer. All you need to have is the VHS player with RCA audio video cables. Then a computer that has video capture card or USB capture card. This will take time but you can just transfer all the copyrighted videos to DVD and to computer data (post to internet)

*Needs realtime transfer VHS to Computer with the prefered resolution option.
*Burn to DVD, it will depends on your DVD drive speed.

How do i go about transfering vhs-c video from an

You have several options. But important one to understand is the limitations of a PIII computer like Armada e500. You may not have enough grunt to convert stuff, even after buying the necessary video capture devices which work on USB.

Also I am assuming you either have the jvc camcorder still available or atleast have a VHS-C to VHS adapter to play the tapes on a standard VHS tape player.

Unless you are having a lot tapes and need editing while converting, your better bet might be to go to one of the shops that convert these tapes on to DVD or a suitable flash drive which might work out cheaper and quicker.

The last time I did this thing (quality of my VHS-C tapes was bad) I bought a Samsung combined VHS Video / DVD recorder and used the dubbing feature to burn DVDs. Cost me about $150 a year ago. I was able to do some editing on the way as I was connected to the TV screen as well. Saved me the hassles of dealling with the PC type video capture devices and software.

I am attempting to convert a vhs tape to dvd. I have purchased a converter and cable to connect with computer via USB all seems OK cannot find if or where it transfers

You probably need some sort of media player or something that will allow your vcr to play the tapes through the computer and will allow you to save it in some type of format such as windows media player or something. After that you should be able to transfer it to DVD with a program such as roxio. To see if your computer is detecting your vcr hook it up go to my computer and look for a new storage device.

VHS backups on DVD

Your VCR will NOT copy any commercialy published tapes to DVD disks. There is a protection built in to every sync line of the video on the VCR tapes. This is known as MacroVision protection.

The machine that you bought has been designed to block anything with MacroVision, and anything with any other industry standard copy protections. The codes for this are permanently burned in to the main uPC of the machine.

The publishers of the tapes do not know who is copying for what purpose, and how many are being copied. Under copyright laws they have the right to to take whatever action necessary to protect all their publications.

VHS to DVD

I just bought at Best Buy the Samsung DVD Recorder & VCR. You can copy your VHS tapes right to DVD and or hook up an external source into the deck and copy them to DVD.  I find it working well but many of my tapes have tracking issues which is becoming a hurdle for myself.
