Question about Dell Latitude CPX Notebook

Ethernet controller missing

For a number of reasons, mainly want to upgrade the OS from 98SE to XP Pro....I fdisked my Dell Lattitude CPx H500 to a single partition and reloaded 98SE plus some of my favorite apps...Loaded sound and video drivers without problem, but can't get on my wired network, nor get on the net through my switch to wireless transmitter/receiver...The adaptor card is a Dynex and have had no problems with it in the past....Loaded the Texas Inst PCI 1225 card bus controller, and tried any number of NIC apps without success...On boot it is looking for a "PCI Ethernet Controller"......I bought the thing some six or so years ago without an OS and don't remember these problems...I need mother board level driver, I think, but can't find any info...Thanks in advance for any advice...David

Wow what an oldie!
Unfortunately XP is no longer supported. This machine was designed for Win98 and 98SE. I expect there is a display driver missing, along with a few more perhaps.
Try loading 98SE and if it is OK, XP is your issue.

Can you change the os on a Latitude CPx from Windows 95 to Windows XP or higher without changing the memory?

You could depending on what is installed. Microsoft recommends atleast 128mb of ram to run XP.
check this page from Microsoft for more info on XP requirements.

Dell Lattitude CPx

first be sure the battery is actually charging ..than second thing to take in mind is the Ram memory ..cause it is the first thing that computer sees for to boot..
i fthe lights came on ..and you still got no activity after you verify the ram memory in another computer .. the only thing that remain is the the cpu..but ..I thing in this case it is the ram memory ..or a power issue..

How to upgrade a Dell Latitude CPX - Intel P3 500-650 laptop

I have a CPX H500GT. To get it to run XP Pro to run right, max out the ram. And get a larger harddrive. Xp uses a substantial amount of space.

May be your system is not supporting usb 2.0.That's way your dvd writer is not functioing at higer speed. To get the advantage of latest technology like this, ultimately u need the latest motherboard .Instead of upgrading your hard drive,Ram and other compnents u should have gone for a new laptop .Cost wise also u could have got full satisfection.
