I have a subscription with McAfee total protection and cannot download
the software before this webroot spy sweeper is removed.I cannot find
this program on my computer and never had a subscription on it.
How can this be removed?
This worked for me. Search the registry for webroot (start->run->type 'regedit'); in regedit, find 'webroot'. Delete the folder that has webroot (it has sub-folder 'spy sweeper'). McAfee should finish installing.

Re: removing webroot spy sweeper
McAfee will complain about a SpySweeper installation even if there only a coupon from a PC Manufacturer (like Dell or HP) or only just SpySweeper settings still on the computer. This is sad, since SpySweeper by itself, as opposed to something like Webroot Antivirus or Webroot Internet Security Essentials, will not conflict with McAfee.
The people at any Antivirus company SHOULD know every other Antivirus company's "Cleanup" program. McAfee is telling customers who PAY them that they need to call a company they don't pay and who normally would have no reason to help somebody who is not even their customer. The scary thing is that Webroot is helping all of McAfee's customers when McAfee is not helping their own customers.
The thing that McAfee tech support should know but isn't bothering to help their customers with is that the Webroot clean up utility is located at:
The long term solution is to get an Antivirus program that is NOT McAfee though. If they refuse to install unless you jump through hoops to remove coupons and configuration settings, and then make you call somebody else who doesn't even have a reason to help you but does anyway, obviously they probbaly aren't a very good Antivirus program.

Hi, If spysweeper was installed then you should find it in "add remove programs" (XP) or "programs and features" (Vista) both can be found in the control panel. When you open it look for webroot. If it's not there type regedit in the search or run box, click on edit and select find, type webroot into the text box and search for any registry entry relating to spysweeper (webroot). If your registry finds an entry click on find next and keep on doing this until the registry is cleared, then restart your PC and try and update Mcafee. If you can't find any registry entry relating to webroot your PC maybe infected with spyware, malware or a virus. In that case i would perform a deep scan of the system whether your antivirus is updated or not.
Good luck and please post back if you need anymore help.
first uninstall the webroot spy sweeper through the following steps. 1.click start 2.go to control pannel 3.open 'add or remove program' 4.a window will open wait for some time until the list is populated
5 i)in that list find webroot spy sweeper and click remove go through the uninstall wizard and finish the uninstallation process
5 ii)if you didn't find webroot spy sweeper there then it can be a virus You need to download a program called MalwareBytes because that searces your entire computer , finds the virus and completely destroys it.
Click the green 'download now' button (don't worry - this is free) and once you've downloaded it, got the updates and done a system sweep which takes a long time but it's worth it, you should be fine. It also solves the desktop, wallpaper and screensaver hijack, too.
6. restart your computer
7.open mycomputer click search and do a search for webroot spy sweeper delete all the files and folders regarding webroot spy sweeper
8.now download mcafee before installing mcafee uninstall MalwareBytes and restart your pc because at a time only one antivirus software should be used
i think this solution will help you if the problem is not fixed please inform i will suggest some other ways
Spy Sweeper is for spyware and that is not the same as anti virus software..If you do not have anti virus software, you should consider a getting one of the more popular types such as McAfee or Trend PC Cillin.these are two readily available types .. It is good to have both spyware and virus protection and they are not the same.. Hope this helps you..
