If you had removed the back off the set with it unplugged and asked
what is the black thing with the big red wire going to the top of the
tube because it has a big hole in it, then we could have guessed what
part had failed but still no way to know how far the damage went into
the electronics. You would need to have someone troubleshoot the set
who knows how to repair electronics.

I dont know how much technical expirence
you have, but be very careful there are many circuits that have high
voltage on them, even when off, and these voltages can be lethal,
especially any thing that is connected directly to the A.C. line [such
as the primary of the power supply]. most of the rest of the set is
isolated from the A.C. line. so be careful. now for the tecnical part,
most common is a failure of the vertical circuit, the shorted IC will
cause the set not to come on in order to protect the power supply.
after you replace the IC and any resistors and diodes that may have
failed as a result of the bad IC, change any caps related to the
vertical circuit, they will be 100, 220, or 47 mfd @ 35 volts or so.
lastly check the zener diode that is connected across the output of the
IC for leakage or shorts. It is also possible for a filter cap. in one
of the low voltage supplies to be open [it may be noticed as it will be
pregnant.]to cause a no operation condition. so good luck and think
    safety.

Do a full reset it can take 2 to 4 hours all you need to do is unplug your tv for that amount of time. It has entered protection mode. Doing this will reset it.

If the red light comes on goes right back off and makes the clicking noisethat means that the TV entered in protection mode.

Protection is a special diagnostic mode, that starts when a fault is detected, the clicking noise is a safety switck that keep turning off TV to prevent further damage.

Try unplugging power cord for one or two hours, if this does not work, then the TV must be tested anby a technician and fixed.

Common reasons for protections are : alignment fault, blown component, short, cold solder joint, PSU problem (power caps blown), Convergence problem (STK IC blown).

For all this problems you need an experienced technician, try first unplugging the TV for a while, as you have had this problem for a while and things are getting worse.

It may be time to replace your TV.

If the TV stays on protection after leaving it unplugged for a long time, that means that there is an internal fault.

The technician will start inspecting and testing the psu board, looking for shorts, faulty capacitors and other possible faults, and then will proceed in testing deflection circuits, convergence and other common faults.

If the TV model is the CRT descripted on title, it may be better to buy a new TV, rather than spending $100 or more to repair it.

Hi..I own a sony bravia 40 inch LED color tv model number kdl-40ex600...i've only had it for about 5 months now and it was working fine..up until I was watching a movie and the picture went completely out....

one of the power boards inside the tv has gone, which is why its blinking 5 times, which one it is i cant tell without using a multimeter on the tv. IF its only 5 months old you should ring up who you got it from and get them to fix it, as it will cost quite a bit to repair.

take your tv to technician who can check your power supply, if your power is coming on and off, than a problem is not as big. firstly let him check a ht of a supply constantly, your supply is cutting.

TV turns on at odd hours by itself

Hi, I had the "Ghost In The Machine". I tried out what I descibed in my original posting.
#1. I unplugged The Set.
#2. I pushed in and held in the power button in for about 5 minutes before bedtime. ( The PC trick I learned) I gave it 5 minutes because a tv set has much more power inside it.
#3. I again pushed in and held the power button in again for 3 minutes the next morning.
#4. I plugged the tv in again. The red standby light was lit. The set did not immeadiatly come on when I tried to power it up.
#5. 5 Minutes later I returned and hit the power button on the remote and it came on like nothing ever was wrong.
#6. It has been fine now for 3 days!!! Powers up when commanded and shuts down like normal. It has yet to come back on or act up as it was doing.
I will keep a watch on it and if it starts up acting again I will repost. I hope this information will be of use to anyone who experienced the same problem. It didn't cost a dime, just some patience. Thanks for a forum that people can exchange information and save trouble and money unless all options are exhausted. Bill
