In the manual it describes using a circulating pump to pump the vinegar through the unit. Is that a separate pump or is that built in to the unit. The manual says to turn power on to the pump, but I don't know how to do that.

First you will need to isolate the domestic water supply and hot water going to your faucets. Then just pumping thru the boiler a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. The longer you do this, the better. Then rinse wit fresh water. When you connect back the supply and hot water, don't be surprised to smell vinegar for an hour or so.

The pump in the $100 flush kit I've seen is just an Attwood WaterBuster cordless utility pump that Wal-Mart sells online for around $35. A $20 bilge pump for a boat might also work if you have a 12V battery around to run it. A/C Utility pumps seem to start around $70 but I'd rather not mix 110V with water if I don't have to.

What do you think regular tank water heaters run on? Magic?

  • hubschrauber Nov 26, 2013

Water pressure and natural gas... and if there is electricity for a spark starter, it is typically a well protected, professionally installed fixture. Considering the type of people who read and comment on posts like this, I didn't think it would be very wise to encourage dangling a 110v sump pump by the cord over a tub full vinegar.

Do you have a softener? Water must be 15 GRS/PPM or less in iron and calcium. Hot spots in unit are boiling water and are causing the noises.
Descale and flush unit following Rinnai Specs and check water hardness for compliance with Rinnai standards because too hard an inlet water will VOID the Heat Exchanger Warranty (10 year).

How do I flush this unit

1) Copy following link for steps showing how to run white vinegar through Rheem tanklessx heat exchanger to partially remove scale that coats heat exchanger and reduces unit efficiency and causes error code IL:

2) Tankless are prone to scale inside heat exchanger and require yearly deliming to mitigate effects. Do the required yearly maintenance to avoid common error codes.

3) Expected cost of maintenance and repair is more expensive than estimated $1-8 monthly energy-bill savings from owning tankless.

I'm assuming you heater will let water flow through and it's not completely blocked with scale. There is a motorised valve that needs to be open. Start with the heater connected normally and run a hot tap. While it is firing turn off the power, this will leave the valve in it's open state. Now connect up your heater to the vinegar supply; do not turn the power back on.

when your tankless starts cycling hot and cold water, then there is probably scale buildup inside the unit.
flushing the unit will remove the scale and any other debris inside the unit.
you can do this yourself, do you have the instruction book that came with the tankless heater?
it is recommended to flush the unit once a year especially if you have hard water.
it takes an hour or maybe a little longer to flush the unit completely.

Rinnai tankless water heater

LC is the error code that you get when you have limescale buildup in the heat exchanger. You need to flush your heat exchanger. If you have the manual for your water heater, use it. The manual to mine is attached. The procedure for flushing it is covered on page 12. I suggest that you have a certified Rinnai plumber perform this task as it requires a ciruclating pump and some hoses that you need to connect to your water heater. If you don't perform this task, it is possible that you will need to replace your heat exchanger and this is not something covered by Rinnai's warranty.
