Simpletech 500 GB won't load

Markrobin743 has asked you to clarify your question to best assist with your Transferred lots of files to problem:
what files did you copy to your external drive?.....have you tried booting in safe mode ? what errors if any do you get ? how far does the boot sequence go?

Out of town and can't troubleshoot until January. Haven't tried loading in Safe Mode. Computer will load another external drive (Maxtor) and memory sticks. Computer sees the drive and can identify it in Properties as the Simpletech but won't autorun.

I had this problem too. Went out and bought a GOOD, Reliable 6' BELKIN replacement cable of the same type. $7.00 at WalMart.

The USB cables these ship with are skinny anemic ****.

Also.. NEVER save more than a total of 128 files and folders into the ROOT of a >120Gb HDD. It will 'save them' but you will lose access to them after reboot.

Always use Folders and Subfolders.

If they are Movies... Make a \Movies dir
If Music, ditto. If Jazz, put in \Music\Jazz.. get it?
If wallpapers, put in \Pictures\Wallpaper get it??
if Tool or Utility, put in \Tools or \Utilities

I am sure none of you can think of 128 different categories of unique stuff that you could not put into subfolders just as easily

I have a Simpledrive 500 GB and I don't use it frequently. Now, my computer asks me to format it. I won't lose my information, what do I have to do?

ok somewhere there has been a fault which has rendered it unreadable in windows, but info still can be pulled off via a Linux Live disc, that is a small operating system like windows that will run off a cd or flash drive, once up and running you can access the hard drive and copy all info to another, then when back in windows you can re formatt and send all info back, I know it sounds a little hard but it is not.
Cheers

My new Laptop with Windows 10 operating system does not recognize my older simpletech 250gb pininfurnina external hard drive. I'm not sure what driver I need to get it to recognize the hard drive.

Try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery program called asoftech data recovery to recover your files. download it from

I've met space limit for my SimpleTech external drive even though my internal drive still has space and both are 250 GB. Are there SimpleTech programs taking up space and if so how much of that 250 GB...

Your internal drive is different than your external drive. If you put more files onto your SimpleTech drive, then that one is going to fill up faster. The best thing to do would be to go through your SimpleTech drive and delete anything that you don't need. I don't remember my SimpleTech drive coming with any software on the drive, but if it did, it didn't take up much space.

Simpletech 500 GB Hard Drive not working

The red light is an indicator of drive failure. The fall it took, especially if the drive was on at the time, could easily cause the drive to break something internally so that it will not function. I found SimpleTech drives to fail pretty easily, even when you're not dropping them. That's been my experience, anyway.

Data recovery is a very expensive proposition. If the hard drive doesn't respond to the interface as normal, they have to be pulled apart and data extracted from the internal platters. This isn't something you can do without a full safe room (dust-free, wearing special suits and all) because any dust can ruin the platter. Since it's so involved, it's usually really, really expensive. Generally, most people don't bother when it reaches that point unless it's business files (like all of your financial data, for instance).

However, if it's something you really need that bad, DriveSavers is one of the best:

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

someone mention to me that its just a laptop drive inside the housing. You can go to fry's and ask. But they will sell you a kit for 20 bucks. The kit contains external power and usb strap cable and bought a seperate housing too. I accessed the ext drive, dragged and dropped all files. But i would check your warranty first, call tech support and double check. IF not what the hey go for it or spends lot of money to retrieve files. Try yahoo.com and under answers and type in simpletech. I dropped mine and recovered all.
