Problem with defrosting my fridge not coming back to cooling mode

Hi,

I accidentally pushed the defrost button in the refridgerator and it went off as if its not working anymore. I never tried this before. Initially i thought that its the way defrosts happen and after a while the cooling would start again but its been 24 hours now and the whole ice melted and still its not going back on. how exactly does the defrost button work ? what should i do?

Sony.

This is a manual defrost unit. There is a push in button on the thermostat knob which puts the unit in defrost mode. Its probably stock in the on position, which is why the unit doesnt cool when it does this. You might have to take the knob apart, or replace the whole assemble if all checked out fine physically.

This could be a bad defrost timer. See if the compressor is working. If it isn`t or only works sometimes. The defrost timer could be bad. When the frig goes into the defrost cycle, turns off the compressor. It may failing to turn the compressor back on after the defrost cycle. Since it stopped defrosting at one point and started again, the defrost timer may be bad. Let me know if this was any help or if I can help any farther.

Unplug the unit then turn the thermostat all the way on then all the way off, then slowly move from off to fully on position do you notice a spring popping sound at a certain point? Yes No? if yes turn it all the way off and wait ten minutes then plug back on, notice if the compressor comes on or not. If it does then turn the thermostat to half way on does it cool now? if yes you have the problem solved, if not you have an issue with the defrost circuit and you need tools to test it, if you have an ohm meter let me know and I will help you further. Several things could cause the problem depending on the model. First, the defrost heater could be bad. It can be checked with a continuity tester or an ohm meter. Second, the defrost timer could be bad and may not be advancing. If you manually advance the defrost timer till it is in the defrost mode, and the defrost heater does heat up, that usually indicates that the heater is good but the timer is bad. Third, there is also a defrost thermostat attached to the heater. It may be bad. The defrost thermostat is a N/C (normally closed) switch and can be checked with a continuity tester.
The heater and thermostat are in the area of the cooling coils, and the timer is many times under the refrigerator.
Hope that helps.

Orange star button inside fridge

There is a defrost timer that starts the defrost. It may be in the section where the temperature controls are located. You will find a round hold with a clutch head screw accessible through the hole. Turn the screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The system should then be in the defrost mode. Wait about 25 minutes and if the timer is good the system should go back into the cooling mode. If it does NOT, advance the timer to the next click and get a replacement timer. The defrost should have taken place if there is no other problem. If the unit went back into the cooling mode and defrost did not take place your problem is in the freezer section behind the rear wall. There you will find two items, a defrost heater and a defrost thermostat. You can check out the heaters with an Ohm meter. No reading, open, means replace the heater.

It sounds like your defrost cycle has stopped working. unplug your fridge for 24 hours and let it defrost. plug it back after 24 hour and if it starts to cool in the fridge part at about 40 degrees F. you will have to replace one of three parts the Defrost Timer, Defrost Themo or Defrost Element. I hope this helps you.
