Samsung DLP Goes Black then 3 Flashing Lights of Death

I have an HLP5063W series Samsung DLP TV. The TV will turn on for about 3-5 minutes then the screen goes black. Sometimes balck and white remnants of what was on still remains before the TV cycles on/off 3 times to attempt to "fix" itself. Then the christmas tree shows up (timer, lamp standby/temp flashing). I immediately thought it was the lamp, so I replaced it with a new one (old one had over 10000 hours - nice!). Same problem persists. I am hoping it is the ballast and not the DMD board, but what makes me think it is not the ballast is the remnants on the TV. The timing of the shutdown is 1) all controls, whether on the TV on the remote fail but the TV is still on. 2) The screen goes black but the lamp is still on. 3) The lamp goes out when the TV shuts itself off. Once this occurs, the TV must be unplugged for awhile to reset, but it happens faster the next time. Could that mean a bad fan? The fan which cools the lamp is working. The TV is out in the open, so it should not be an overheating issue unless there is another fan in there somewhere that has failed. Can't be the shutoff switch on the back panel. Any ideas? Please don't say DMD.

I do not have any of the tools which you guys talk about. Would the manual still be helpful? If so, where can I pick one up/download a copy of the service manual?

  • russjwhite Dec 19, 2008

Does the service manual explain how to test the components? What kind of tools do I need to test?

  • russjwhite Dec 19, 2008

I have purchased the service manual for the television. Is there anything I can attempt to fix the problem while I am waiting for the manual to arrive? Any additional information you can provide on diagnosing and remedying the problem described would be helpful.

I replaced the color wheel about two months ago and it has worked fine, can hear it spinning up. The ballast does arc when the TV starts after being cold for about 15 minutes. Cannot restart the TV without leaving it unplugged for awhile. Even unplugging the TV for a few minutes, when plugging it back in it tries to restart itself 3 times and fails.

  • russjwhite Dec 19, 2008

I forgot to mention that after I replaced the color wheel, the set started playing this melody whenever I turned the TV on or off. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

  • russjwhite Dec 19, 2008

So here is what I know. It is not the lamp and it is not the color wheel. The TV does work, for awhile but then something fails. The ballast fires to start the TV and lamp continues to shine after the screen goes black. With all this in mind, do the symptoms seem to point to one internal component that could be failing, or could it be just about any component has failed and I need to test everything through a process of elimination to find the broken component?

With TV prices what they are, would it be more economical to simply purchase a new set? If so, is there a brand or model you would recommend that does not have as many issues as others? It seems Samsung has quite a few problems and I would really like to be able to trust that my TV is going to last atleast 5 years.

Well, im not supposed to say this, but DMD.
sorry, but it sounds like it is overheating (there is usually more than one fan..one for the lamp, one for the DMD and one for the main board), either that or the color wheel is stopping / failing...
it may be worth it to take a look inside and just wait for shutdown so you can go from there!

Your TV needs qualified and experienced TV Tech Guy to rectify the problem as it seems complicated.

Digital processing board and System control section seems defective and need to be checked.

It most likely the color wheel,, this will account for the tv going black and whit, you may need to replace it.

With lamp out (door closed) the ballast should "strike" or give an arc sound, trying to fire the lamp. If it does not do that maybe the color wheel is not spinning up - has to do that first.........then the set will try to fire the lamp

What is called ballast on the rear projection TV is a small power board that powers the lamp, this can be defective, but also main PSU can be cause for the problem.

There are also a couple of ICs that must be tested when you get sudden shut down.

The best thing to do is getting a copy of the service manual,=.

It can be still overheating, but it is more common having a problem on boards because a faulty capacitor, or a faulty IC returns a bad voltage or fails only after a while.

In this case you need to follow the troubleshooting diagrams on the service manual, that will drive you in testing the ballast, the PSU, and a couple of ICs on the main board.

You can get the service manual for $7.5 on Ebay(Samsung SM-HLP5063W SERVICE MANUAL), or order for $15 or so from PArstore.

The service manual has what are called troubleshooting diagrams.

They will tell you what to do starting from a fault description.

To test components you mainly use a Multimeter
    .

The point is that you should not do it yourself if you do not have the necessary background, a technician must study and practice several years before being able to fix this unit without damaging it or endangering himself and the final user.

Samsung HL-P5063W makes a whining sound and then goes off

The most common failure in the DLP that makes a whining sound would be the color wheel. They cost about $135 + labor because I wouldn't advise changing it by yourself.

I have a Samsung 50 inch DLP - I heard a pop and the picture immediately disappeared. The 3 lights were flashing on the front which according to the book said it needed a new lamp installed. I ordered it,...

Sounds like the color wheel may have also gone bad. I recently saw a 56" Samsung where the bulb and color wheel went at the same time. The color wheel could produce a crying noise while trying to spin up.

Samsung DLP

First try a "hard rest" , unplug tv for 5 minutes then plug it back in when you go to turn it on hold the power button in for a minute or until you hear a beep , if that doesn't work , could several things , let me know if the hard reset works first.
