I have the same problem. I turn the DVD recorder on and it repeats "hello" endlessly. It fiannly turns off without doing anything. The problem started when I switched teh unit off at teh power point without first turning off the player itself.

There is a bad capacitor in the power supply that controls the 12V going to the HDD and DVD player. When you turn it on, the 12v drops to 7 volts and the unit turns it self back off. You just get the "hello" message briefly. You need to replace the part (1000uf, 25v), it's probably showing signs of bursting at the top or bulging.

I noticed this in a 397d that came to me from a relative. I've just replaced this part in it and it's come good again.

See bad caps at for why this happens.

Can you record from a smart tv with arecording box

First of all you need to check if your TV supports recording. Some 2010 models do and most 2011 have it implemented. Look for stickers or logos such as:
  • USB Recording
  • PVR (Personal Video Recorder)
  • DVR (Digital Video Recorder

  • The following manufacturers support it in some of their models. Typically mid-end to high-end models. Check the manufacturer web site if you are unsure.
  • Samsung
  • Sony
  • LG
  • Philips
  • Panasonic
  • Toshiba
  • Sharp (only Time Shift pausing)
  • Grundig

    What you need

Many consumers have USB recording enabled TVs without actually using the function - simply because it requires an extra USB hard drive ou need the following:
    1. USB Recording: A HDTV that supports recording.
    2. A USB HDD: FlatpanelsHD uses a USB HDD from Transcend.
    3. Digital channels: Recording is only enabled on digital channels - not analog. You can record SD, HD and 3D.
Some manufacturers recommend USB hard drives with external power supplies but we have used a Trandscend USB HDD that takes power from the USB plug on all manufacturers' TVs without any problems. Manufacturers typically allow 1:1 recording, meaning that you will see no loss in picture quality.

How to set up USB Recording

Once you have purchased a USB hard drive and connected it on the back of the TV you can move on to "pairing" the USB HDD with the TV. Here is how to set up USB recording.

  • Connect the USB HDD to a free USB port on the back of the TV.
  • The USB hard drive now needs to be formatted (all data will be deleted).
  • Most TVs help you to format the USB HDD automatically but on some models you need to enter the menu and select format HDD (or something similar)

if it uses a SATA hdd it maybe the drive is faulty & is now not booting at all. most will take a normal pc SATA hdd but check what the max size your unit can take as they have there own format & you may make the drive un-usable in a pc again. i would say get a second hand 160 - 250GB drive and try it out. as they are cheap 2nd hand.

While watching a recording of a program that is also on at the same time, the dvr jumps ahead to the LIUVE mode. How do we stop it from jumping ahead?

Check your recording to see what the duration of the recording is. If the whole event is not being recording, that could explain why it is going to live mode. While recording an event, you can watch the recording. Please send me an email with a little more information: what method you are using to record, TV 1 or TV 2, and if this is happening all the time or just began. Here is my email address: Thanks.
