IBM R51 Laptop cannot be turned on anymore

Hi,

I have aproblem with an IBM R51 Thinkpad.
When pressing the powerbutton, the battery-light, the powerlight goes on. The numlock and the capslocks lights are turned of for e few seconds and are the turning of.
The machine stays on (you cab hear the fan blowing) but no screen will appear.
Also tried to start up with the HD and memory removed, same situation...

I think it's a problem with the mainboard... what do you think?

Somebody suggested the CMOS battery might need changed.
In my case, the lights sometimes blink briefly, but the disk,
    fan, etc. do not run.

Mysteriously, if you leave it connected to AC power for awhile
(with or without a battery) it will power-up normally.

I have an IBM Thinkpad R51 (1830-BUU) laptop, with a significantly older hard disk (1999). For about 3 weeks, the laptop had been working fine, but then it fell off of a table (2 ft high, Carpet) and when I powered it back on, the normal IBM screen came up, but after that the machine told me that no operating system could be found. I tried unplugging the hard disk, and plugging it back in. When I restarted it, the same thing happened, but the HD/Activity light was stuck on the entier time, and the hard disk would turn on, then off, on, off, on, off about every second. I tried unplugging the AC and battery, and the CMOS battery, the RAM, nothing resolved the issue. I obtained another IBM R51 (1830-BUU) with a dead screen backlight, keyboard, and hard disk, and I put my existing screen backlight, hard disk, and keyboard in the new machine, along with my old RAM (so that I would have 1GB, not 512MB). I started it up, and windows loaded fine, and it worked until I restarted, and then the exact same thing that happened to my old one occured on this one too, there was no operating system detected, the HD/Activity light was off, and the disk turned on and off. When I tried reseting the power, the same thing except that the HD/Activity light was stuck on, just like last time. I have not tried reseting the CMOS battery on this one yet, but I doubt it will help.

Please, if anyone knows and ideas about this problem, please either reply to this message, or email me at jeremywork@gmail.com
    Thank You!

PS: It should be noted that I do not have a system battery for mobile use.

Update: I have some clues that lead to BIOS virus. Does this sound right?

Does your hard drive have a "caddy" or "drive sled" installed? Mine did the same until I bought one.

Were is the CMOS battery on IBM Thinkpad 1830 R51?

Hi.

The cmos battery for your model of computer should be just under the bottom shell cover, you may even be able to get to it from one of the covers on the underneaf or else you going to have to take the whole of the bottom of the shell off of the laptop.

it should be either yellow or blue with a little cable on it.

Hope this is of help to you.

Hi, My IBM ThinkPad R51 type 1829 will not come out of hibernation/sleep mode. I have tried using all the FN and F keys, removing battery, etc. I recall this happening about a year ago and I had to...

This is called an ATX reset.
Remove the battery and the power cable.
Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Put the battery back in and power cable.
Turn back on.

Disable boot up password in R51

You could open up the R51 and remove the CMOS battery. This would reset the password.

Here is a link I found that allows one to hack the BIOS password:

Or try this fixya thread:

check the battery is this new? if this is new then this is under warranty. if this is old you may check the connectivity. most batteries have an age life of 2 years. you need to replace this if you think this is already attained the 2 years long service
