Off the top of my head that sounds like your DVD ROM drive needs to be cleaned, your laser may be dirty. A ROM cleaner isn't hard ot get your hands on. I'd also make sure the discs you're using are clean also. If your discs appear clean a ROM cleaner may well fix this.

"Please insert a writable disc into drive E:."

Windows thinks E: is a CD/DVD drive ...this maybe becasue it can't understand the USB stick 'format' (especially if it's come from a Tablet/smart phone)

Try a different USB stick (they are cheap enough these day to just throw away when they start acting up)

Disc drive no longer reads discs, when trying to burn error "please insert empty disc" pops every time, regardless of CD inserted.

Assuming you have already tried a cleaning kit, the unit has probably burnt out the laser and will need replaced. Luckily new DVD+R burners can be found for less than $25.

Try to reinstall it. Go into Control Panel>System>Hardware and find the drive and uninstall the driver then reboot the computer. If that doesn't work it may need cleaning

Dell PC unable to read blank discs

There is a easy solution! Buy a new DVD burner...

I went through 2 DVD burners in one year (I bought a really cheap "mad dog" DVD burner...never again to say the least). I saw a "insert disc", even though there was already a disc in the burner, and thought "I'm not paying for a new burner, I'll fix this one...". I eventually got it to work again, but all that I got was corrupt disc after corrupt disc.

I'll bet that it still reads CD's fine doesn't it? Yeah? Well then, trust me, buy a new one. It'll save you time, money (you won't waste all those DVD/CD's), headaches, moments of depression, anxiety, frustration, and your sanity.

Except no substitutes of a solution. Don't go through what I did...

I also suggest ccleaner (freeware) from filehippo.com to clean out the system and not only run the "Analyze/Clean", but also verify "Tools/Startup" and uncheck ANY program that you are unsure of.

I hate my computer!

No, this doesn't cost unless you sign up for Premium Assistance.
  1. Remove the disc from the drive.
  2. Look at the top of the disc (or game box). Verify whether it is a CDROM or DVD-ROM.
  3. If it is a DVD-ROM, verify the drive on your computer that you are inserting the disc into is capable of reading DVD-ROMs.
  4. Go to My Computer and verify which drive letter is the drive you'll be inserting the disc into.
  5. Insert the disc.
  6. Wait 20 seconds. If the disc doesn't automatically start up, go to step 7.
  7. Open My Computer and double click the drive containing the disc.
  8. If My Computer now shows the disc contents, find the most likely ".exe" file and run it.

HOW DO YOU CREATE A CD OR COPY A CD

Click on my computer, then insert a blank disc into the writer hard drive. Then put things you want to burn on the disc. Then burn the things on the disc. And if you have a disc copying program, Insert a blank disc into the writer drive and insert the disc you want to copy and then copy the cd.
