Question about Black & Decker Alligator Electric Lopper

1 Answer

Lost instructions for Alligator

How do I lubricate, and what kind of oil?
How to I sharpen?
Is it possible to get another copy of the instructions?

By the way, I love the tool despite the fact that I am normally nervous of using power tools.

I cannot find the instructions for my Black & Decker Alligator. It is very intuitive to use, so I am using it anyway. But I know there is maintenance that is supposed to be done. The dial knob is very difficult to turn, any idea why would that be?

harsh cleaning chemicals (bleaches/soaps ) sometimes removes oil or even produces rust on thread of adj bolt's , a few well placed drops of vegetable oil and working it back and forth a few times will loosen it back up

lubricants on food slicers should always be a "food grade lubricant " that's why I like good ole vegetable oil

How do I make sure chain oils lubricating chain

You must start your chainsaw and hold the guide bar about 3 to 5cm from the ground and give it full revs. If you touch the surface, you can start sharpening again. While on full revs, a line of oil should show on the surface. If not, clean the guide bar and the hole where the oil should enter to lubricate the guide bar and make sure there are no blockages.

Can i sharpen chain

Yes, you can do it with a hand file or if you need to sharpen them often I would suggest an electric sharpener. There are models you can mount to your chainsaw or remove your chain and use a bench mounted sharpener. I would suggest looking at www.sharpchain.com for your sharpening solutions.

Baldes locked up

Ensure blades are sharpened. If there are burs on blades they can seize.
Blades should be lubricated with WD40 , waste oil or other lubricant.
The bolts holding the two blades together shouldn't be too tight.

I use a dremel with a sharpening stone, if u don't have one you can also use a power drill with a small sanding disk (1 inch) and course sand paper (30 or 40 grit). or you can use a bastard file. its too tight to use any kind of angle guide so just take your time and do it by eye. it shouldn't take much to get them sharp enough to do the job, over-sharpening is unnecessary and dangerous, and will make the blades dull faster. sharpen all the free blades, top and bottom, then start the trimmers to advance the blades to free up the sides you couldn't get. i use a light penetrating oil to clean the blades first, then lithium grease spray to lubricate.
