You don't need drivers to format a computer, well, not installe anyway, as the process would simply delete the contents of the index file. The data is never deleted per se, just not indexed and consequently overwritten by new data.

Could you clarify what exactly happens after you press the power button and/or reset button? You say you removed its memory by removing the jumpers, what jumpers did you remove? Jumpers shouldn't need to be removed from the hardware. If you've removed the jumpers from the DVD ROM that doesn't really help I'm afraid. Put that back in that case. In most ROM you can set the jumper to "Cable Select" to allow your device to work no matter which position (master/slave primary/secondary) it is hardware installed in.

Please ellaborate on where exactly it stop booting on its own. Every step it goes through from when you start thecomputer.

If windows isn't detecting your dvd drive and you think it's because of a virus, check if your bios is detecting it alright. if it is you can just change your boot options to boot from CD and you can format your computer without starting windows.

Tips how to remove a virus that can not be handled Anti-virus

There is a very powerful tips to remove the virus, if the various Anti Virus that we use entirely powerless against it (probably only detect, but can not delete it). To do this would require a Bootable CD that contains a minimum of the File Manager program, such as Ultimate Boot CD, BartPE, and the like. Some programs are DOS-based and others are windows based. Or we could use a Linux Live CD, like Knoppix, Ubuntu Live CD and others. In General, the following steps:
  1. Find the location of the virus, especially the origin of the virus is running on your computer (the host)
  2. Once obtained, note (note) information such as file size, date (although the virus can change the size and date, but most always the same size and date. Can find similar files and recorded their location.
  3. Once obtained, use one of the Bootable CD and restart the computer to boot from a CD (you might need his first set its BIOS to first boot the CD / DVD-ROM).
  4. Open the file manager program, which is available. If using windows NT, XP or above, make sure the program supports reading NTFS format
  5. Find the file / virus and delete or if still in doubt, just rename from *. exe to *. VRS example. To convince, use the search facility to find files with the same size or nearly the same date. If found , you can rename it.
  6. Back restart the computer and check again

Windows XP with SONY RW-AW-G170A DVD-RAM Drive

try a bit of burning software called "infra-recorder"

http://infrarecorder.org/

Its 100% free. If it doesn't work with this, then try the drive on another computer. If it doesn't work there well then the Drive is dead.

If it works on another computer try updating your drivers for your whole system and if that doesn't work reinstall with the newest drivers and software that you can find.
