If a program is failing and you want to disable DEP to see if that is the cause. Here are the steps. (Just disable DEP for the program in question… don’t disable it for your whole system.)

    1. Click Start
    2. Select Control Panel
    3. Select System
    4. Click the Advanced tab
    5. In the Performance region select Settings
    6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
    7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
    8. Click Add.
    9. The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
    10. Click Open
    11. Click Apply
    12. Click Ok
    13. Reboot
    Please rate this a Fixya

There is two area's that DEP is held One in the perfomance section and the other in IE Firstly we'll fix IE DEP 1. Open up IE and quickly select Tools 2. Select the advanced tab 3. Uncheck the Enable memory protection 4. Restart IE to apply. 1. Start\Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools\Adjust visual effect 2. Select the Data execution prevention tab 3. Check the Enable DEP for Essential windows programs and services 4. Restart the computer to apply.Disable DEP using CMD A) In the command prompt, type bcdedit.exe set {current} nx AlwaysOff and press Enter.B You should get a success message back C Close the command prompt. D Restart the computer to apply. Enable DEP using CMD A In the command prompt, type bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx OptIn and press Enter. Data execution prevention when downloading an ebook ie, & adobe

Where did you get the e-book from? DEP exploits are a hackers dream. You can turn on and off the feature (Win7 has it on by default). Setting it can be done in the System section of the Control Panel under Performance Options. (The choices are Always ON, Always OFF, Opt-in or Opt-Out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention has more information on the different choices)

In XP this can be changed by right clicking on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Advanced tab, then Settings in the Performance section. Finally click on the Data Execution Prevention tab.

I hope this helps.

Com surrogate

There's a possible solution below of turning off DEP for dllhost, which might not work for everybody. You may have to add divx+nero executables to the DEP ignore list.
  • Essentially, turning off Data Execution Prevention on dllhost (the COM surrogate) can fix this problem for some people. This solution is detailed below.
Right click on Computer, and choose Properties
Click on Advanced System Settings, and then under Advanced, click Settings
Select the "Data Execution Protection" tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select .
Click on the Add button, and then browse to C:\Windows\System32\dllhost.exe as shown
Click Open, and then OK.
Here's what you should see…

DEP comes on and closes WMI which does not allow acess to IE. I set boot.ini to /execute=AlwaysOff and rebooted, but same problem.

If you have done any updates on your computer and you upgraded your browser to Internet Explorer 8, then you need to do this to correct your issue (I have the same problem today for a clients computer and this resolved it):

In Internet Explorer 8 goto to Tools > Internet Options > Click on Advanced Tab > go under Security and uncheck "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks"
This should fix you up, and if it doesn't let me know. I know all about DEP.

Desktop doesn't appear on the computer.

hi there, The error 0xC0000005 is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations.

i would suggest that the ram in your computer has possibly broken down over a period, may i recommend obtaining some new ram, if you go to www.crucial.com they can provide you with information that tells you which ram you have in your PC.
