My drive reads DVDs with no problem, but CDs (data & audio) are not recognized. The drive makes a faint noise several times after a CD is entered then nothing happens. If I click on the CD icon in Windows, a message is displayed saying "please insert disk."

I guess my drive faulty. Removing the drive and having Windows reinstall it didn't fix the problem.
i have no problem with reading dvd.BUT READING CD IS ALWAYS A BIG PROBLEM FROM THE BEGINING FOR ME.I HAVE REINSTALLED THE IDE/ATP...AND CD/DVD DRIVE...FROM DEVICE MANAGER.
it may have dual laser and one that reads cd's is faulty, but try uninstalling the dvd drive first then re installing it to see if it cures it, if not the drive will need replacing.
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers
