Dtv converter box - low sound

I purchased a Magnavox # E 175216 converter box from Walmart. After installing it the picture was fine, but the sound volumn was way down. Where I used to listed to the tv at say 9 or 10 now I need to crank it to at least 25 or more. Is this because I bought a "cheap" box or is this a common problem with converter boxes. Is there a way to correct this?

I have a Zenith converter box and the same thing happened after hook up--extremely low volume. I too have to really crank it up. Another thing I found is that if I record on a VCR and play the tape back on another set, the sound is almost nil.

always having to adjust the is either too loud or too low

  • Anonymous May 10, 2009

I have purchased 3 different brands of Digital Converter boxes and have the same problem on all 3 units that the volume is way too low. When I record on a VCR tape, the volume on the TV has to be all the way up to maximum, and I have to sit very close to the TV to hear it. When I stop the tape, the TV blares the sound so loud it startles everyone in the house. It's an awful problem. Note: One of the Converter boxe is a PLUS model which is suppsed to have a stronger audio/video reception, but noooo...

I heard that 3 RCA cable connections would resolve this problem (instead of a coax cable connection) but it didn't. I recorded some very special programs that I wanted to keep, but they were useless and disappointing. Can hardly hear them. BTW: My hook ups are all correct.

Sure wish I could resolve it.

I have a Zenith model , Actually TWO. BOTH of them are the same way. It makes No difference if the RF modulator output, or the Line output is used. The volume needs to be around 90% up on the TV to hear decent and this is with the internal volume of the converter turned all the way up! I got sick of this so I did some searching and found a kit that solved my problem. I actually built a Audio line level booster which actually works quite nice. The model is Velleman-Kit Model # K2572. About 17$ before shipping. This solution is if you are experienced in Electronics and want to build a board kit. I had to do as recommened and change the two input resistors to 100k ohm (Described in note in kit). You will also need a power supply to power it; a 10-30vdc transformer pack supply will work. I made mine. I know this is if you are a hobbiest which you may not be... so.... If you want to buy an already built product to fix the problem you can buy one on ebay for about 50$ ( Model TCC TC-780LC ) before shipping. Do a search in ebay for that model #. I can not make any claims wether it works because I have not tried it, but it does claim to do the job and it looks like it would. Good luck!

Magnavox TB100MW9 DTV Converter repair

After a close-by lightning strike, my Magnavox TB100MW9
Digital TV Converter box stopped working. I took it apart and found a
shorted diode (the fat one on the power side of the board)
marked with the number SB340. From the NTE cross-reference
web site, I found a replacement diode, NTE586 (Si, Fast
Switching, Schottky Barrier Diode) that cost me $2.40 at
a local electronic parts store. I replaced the diode and
it works fine!

Want to run my dtv receiver through new digital converter box.

You will not be able to record local station from a DTV converter connected thru a directv receiver unless there is a a/v input on the directv samsung receiver. Also check the user manual for this receiver if recording from an external source such as a DTV converter box is possible. The answer to seperating the DTV converter box from the directv samsung receiver is possible if your tv has multiple inputs. Try connecting the DTV box to the RF input and the directv samsung box to an a/v input then change inputs using the tv remote. you will need an av cable (yellow/ red/white) for the directv box and a rf jumper cable for the DTV box.

I recently hooked up my dtv box, tuned the antenna and have a great picture. On every channel I have background noise. Sounds like bacon frying, hissing noise. I also set up someone else's tv, very simple....

If there is a volume control on the remote that came with the converter box, use it to make sure the box volume is set to its maximum. Many models allow you to control the volume out from the box to the TV, and the levels are set about halfway. When you turn up the volume on the TV cause it's too low, you can get the kind of audio problem you describe. Make sure you turn the volume down on the TV first before starting with the box.

I give up trying to get this to work. This thing is a joke. We will just go purchase an American made Digital tv today. The "800" that came with the DTV converter was answered by someone who didn't give a **** about helping anyone. What a waste of time and money.

Digital converter box

Greetings kathy76turne,

In February 2009 you will be unable to receive ANY analog television signals therefore the digital converter box will be a necessity to receive any over the air broadcasts.

I am unable to answer the question about the mini van's electrical capability, however you might find the following link handy to get more information.

Thank you!
