Been having audio problems for a week & download driver
I am trying to download the SP40170 which is apparently the newest driver for this HP notebook. It won't install. I'm getting an X on my speaker--the conextant High Def stereo, beats me. I have lost the icon of the speaker in the box, the driver, as well, and I'm going crazy. I have the dv6704 0r 6700 not sure. The tech guy from HP said he sent me the newest driver to download, which was the one above. I was working last night, but today all sound stopped

Typically, if you are getting a "device not found" error upon trying to install an audio device driver, there are a number of issues that could be going on at one time.
First: You may have the wrong device driver or version of the device driver for the device intended for. Check the hardware version number and verify on the website of the hardware device (the audio card if it is an independent audio card that is what you are referring to) what is the latest revision of the driver. Download the driver and install it.
Second: If your device is an external audio card, make sure it's fully inserted into the PCMIA slot (seriel port if being used). If so, then accomplish the following procedure: Power down your PC. Remove the Audio Card and reboot PC. Allow PC to recognize no audio card, then shut down PC and reinstall Audio Card. Reboot PC and install with new Audio Driver
One of the two steps above should rectify the problem. If it doesn't, then the last resort is to assume the Audio card is faulty if it's an external Audio card.
If you have an internal Audio card, then there can be a faulty portion on the sound portion of the motherbood, which then would require the entire motherboard to be replaced. But before you result to this, be sure you have the newest Audio driver for the Audio Codec and installed correctly.
Please keep in mind, Conexant is an OEM supported Audio Codec and you need to refer to the maker of the PC itself for driver support. I.E. it may be a Conexant Audio chipset installed in a HP PC. So, be sure you go the manufacturer website such as "HP" for the audio driver support.
Click "Start"button, Select "Run", type "services.msc", press enter. Scroll down till you find Windows Audio, make sure the services is started and configuring it to start up automatically by right clicking on "Windows Audio" and selecting "properties".
If you have somehow or by mistakenly uninstalled the audio driver, your sound won't work.
Right click on "My Computer" icon, Select "Manage", Click on "Device manager ", expand "Sound,Video and Game controller" and make sure your Audio driver is listed there.
In case you are missing the driver, I'm giving you the download page link from where you can download the Audio driver.
Did u download the Sound Drivers for Windows 7, if so then whether you have the correct drivers or not. If you still face the same problem then Download & Install Driver Max software which is available at www.drivermax.com. This software automatically detects the hardware of your computer and provides links for the drivers. You can download the relevant drivers from the links provided.
