Question about Samsung HLR5067WX 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Color wheel or cooling fan ?

My Samsung 50inch started making an awful noise this morning. Sounds like someone is using a sander or something. Almost a noise and vibration at the same time. The picture started flickering and changing colors also. Never had any problem at all until this happened. This is a 2005 model. Does this sound like the color wheel going out or maybe the cooling fan ? I read your article on replacing the color wheel. Great directions. Would these directions also work for my T.V ? Hope this isn't too many questions all at once. Thank you, Tom

Cooling Fan noise

Another possible source for the noise is the Color Wheel. It is spinning at a high rate and the noise will get louder as it wears out. You should be able to replace the part yourself. Take a look here first: http://www.fixya.com/support/t372149-samsung_hlp4663w_color_wheel_replacement

Yes, the Color Wheel would be the only thing left. I am not sure about this exact model but the Color Wheel in other Samsung models are replaceable.
Hope this helps,

Tv makes a noise

This is definitely the color wheel. It is not the same thing as the cooling fans. The color wheel is buried; even if you took the back off the set you cannot even see it. It's a pretty pricey repair.

That's probably the Color Wheel you are hearing. When you turn the set on the color wheel has to run, one of the several things that has to happen for the set to come on. The color wheel sends a signal back to the control circuit to tell it it's running. If these sets fail to light the lamp they will shut off and try again, that's why you hear the color wheel start then wind down then start again. The set should try three times before it decides it's not going to be able to turn on.

One way you can tell the difference in the fan sound and color wheel sound is if you can get the set on, let it run for a little while so it gets warm, then when you turn it off the color wheel will start winding down but the fans will continue to run for a minute or two.

Sudden noise started that sounds much like a fan wearing out. Stops when I turn off the HL-R5667 TV. Is there an easy way to find and repair the problem?

could possibly be the color wheel, as if it were the cooling fan the noise would continue for a few minutes after shutting the set off. You can get replacement color wheels at the following link with free tesch support to explain how to install them yourself.

HDTV Rear Projection

The color wheel is the most common problem when it comes to noise from DLP's. To determine if it is a color wheel or fan: Turn on the set. When the noise starts, turn off the set. If the noise goes away within 5 seconds, then the color wheel is bad. If the noise goes away after one to one and a half minutes after the set was shut off, then one of the fans are making the noise.
