THE SHIFTER SHIFTS OUT OF PARK BUT WONT SHIFT BACK INTO PARK

On my '96 Olds 98, brake transaxle shift interlock is simply a pain in the ***. Solution: always press foot brake AND parking brake hard and hold while shifting into park and shutting down engine. Try not to park "downhill." Read owners manual;"shifting out of park." This even calls for opening and shutting the door! If you can't start in park, try neutral. If all else fails, unhook red battery cable for a minute. Re-attach and restart car, which should re-set computer to recognize your key, which has a computer chip embedded in it. Worst option EVER invented!

It has a brake-transaxle shift interlock. You should just push the brake in to shift, but if you have done that, and it still won't shift, with foot on the brake, push the shifter all the way into park. Sometimes they don't always go into park all the way. Also if you park on a hill, it puts pressure on the btsi, so you cant shift it. Have someone push the vehicle back, just enough to take the pressure off and it should shift. I had this happen to me with my Grand Am.

SOURCE: can't shift out of park

the switch under the shifter is sticking.something might have got spilled.if you can get cover off and take some parts cleaner spray and spray around the switch this should loosen the switch up this happens more frequently than you might think good luck!

SOURCE: How to shift the transmission from park to neutral manually.

there is a shift linkage on the tranny ,look for the end of the cable on the tranny turn the linkage by hand , should be on top or right on front side.

SOURCE: Car starts and runs fine. Wont shift out of park.

CHECK BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FUSE AND THE BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID FUSE.IF THEY BOTH CHECK OUT OKAY.YOU HAVE A FAULTY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR FAULTY BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

1998 gmc 1500 5.7L shifter sticks (auto transmission. ) its a bugger to get out of park, i was thinking the brake sensor (disconected the shifter cable at the tranny)then it shifts fine, and can shift fine...

Shift interlock system problem . Not the cable . Your vehicle has a safety system that won't allow the gear selector to be moved from park without the brake pedal pushed . Lock solenoid keeps gear selector from moving . Trying to force it will break something . Do you know how to test electrical circuits with a volt meter ? Enter the vehicle info. Year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on transmission / transaxle , then under subsystem click on shift interlock . Have a 2003 Dodge Intrepid. I can't get the shifter on the column to move out of park even when I move the steering wheel up,down & side to side. Is it the cable, the link, what?

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

Shifting when driving
